Completely blocked computer! Bad virus

Hi,

I got infected with a very bad virus. HOT SEX, Error Cleaner, Privacy Protector, Spyware&Malware Protection icons appeared on my desktop while some windows were opening/closing from nowhere. I panicked and pushed the Restart button, and from now on, 10 seconds after the computer's startup, it freezes completely; I even hear the fan/HDD inside the computer case slow down. The mouse still works, but that's all.

Even if I try to boot in safe mode, when it comes the time to choose the safe mode, the keyboard no longer responds; enter, arrows, I cannot choose the mode.

Now, I'm on my Mac (thank god Macs exist) and still searching how to get rid of this shit.

I can't even run HijackThis! : (

I have Windows XP Home, Core2Duo, 1024 RAM.

Thank you for your answers

Your best option? Reformat or even delete the primary to insure all traces are gone. Hopefully you have a full install disk to see a clean copy of Windows go back on afterwards.

A simple reinstall may see Windows up and running but others outside of the Windows could be contaminated as well. You simply press L during the reinstall to see the existing MS folders deleted and then new ones are created by the installer. A total wipe however insures no leftovers for a possible reinfection.

I agree on the total wipe completely. Ive told people but they said i don't know what im talking about. Oh well, They lend up not listening and always say the same thing. I have the same problem. hhmmm.........

Didn't know about the 'L' key though.
thanks........thats how come i keep coming back.
i always low level format and the freeware works fine.
thaks

Thank you for your answers.

I have quite some important files on the infected HD. How could I restore them back after the reformatting?

I once did it this way, I had a LiveCD of PCLinuxOS, I booted into PCLinuxOS from the Live CD, I got internet Connection AutoMatically, then I browsed my HardDrive for the files that I needed and Uploaded them to a Site through FireFox. I don't think you'll try that.

No but a live cd like ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04 being the latest would allow access to the drive in order to see files copied from that primary before seeing it wiped clean. The only problem you could end up seeing with any virus is other stored files being infected as well.

That depends on what besides Windows itself is infected if and the word if there. A quick reinstall would simply see the MS Windows, DocumentsandSettings, and some parts of the Programs Files directories replaced while other folders would still be left intact. After running a few good scans afterwards you would then copy safe files to another drive/partition for a total cleaning if needed.
