compound: one blob or a micro one?

The amount you need is very small, that is probably why it spread out so far. It needs to be about as thin as a sheet of paper. Don't cover the whole metal part of the heatsink either.

that could be the reason it is running at 72c
heh heh. Yeah that might be why it's running so hot. I'm not to sure how you could fix that though cause once you put the compound/paste on it gets into all the tiny little crevices on the HS.

Applying too much hs compound can increase the temperature. I learned that it is best if you put a BB-size amount of AS5 on the center of the surface of the CPU then let the pressure of the heatsink spread it out. If that doesn't work, use a library card, Student ID, or any type of unused plastic card to spread it out. Again, AS THIN AS POSSIBLE WHILE COVERING THE SURFACE EVENLY.

The nice thing is you can scrape it flat and the stuff thats in the crevices can stay in the crevices ... the overlap wont/shouldnt be critical (especially if its a decent heatsink)
