Compressing?

Hi there,
I'm starting to run low on hard drive space, and haven't got the time or money to back my files up or to buy a new hard drive. I was wondering if I use the option to "compress the hard drive to save disk space" will that make a big impact or not? Well it effect the way anything works?

Compressing the disk will degrade the performance, it's hard to say how much space you will 'gain' though.
 
Clear favorties, history, cookies, and files. IE - Tools - Internet Options
Clear unwanted/unneeded programs. My computer - control panel - add remove programs
Disk Cleanup - start - programs - accessories - system tools - disk cleanup
defrag - start - programs - accessories - system tools - disk defragments.

That should free you up some

thanks but i've done all that and only have 3 gb left
 
320 gb. There is a lot of files and stuff on here. A lot of it is work and school stuff, research, practice exams, Outcomes, assignments, Extra notes, powerpoints, presentation notes. Then I got all my music and games. It goes quickly when you got another 2 people using it as well.
 
I know what you mean, im going to suggest to you something that i did which freed me up 100gb of space.

Get this program called SequioaView, it is a program that gets everything that takes up space on your hard drive and turns it all into Squares of relevant size, so the biggest square is the file on your computer taking up the most space, you will find a truck load of old files and folders which you never even browse near any more whicha are takin up 3gb of space each, i was amazed at all the old crap i had :)

Give it a go, you might find its worth the download.
 
Then why don't you compress the files instead of the hdd? There is a very good program called "Alzip" which allows you to compress any kind of data.
 
Any compression program will let you compress any file but ntfs compression lets you still use the files without having to specifically decompress them. It does save some space but because it compresses/decompresses the files on demand there is some performance loss when dealing with compressed files. I wouldn't compress directories that you use a lot but if you have the CPU power to spare the impact will be fairly small, especially if your hard drive isn't that fast.
