computer advice? :D

i was lookin on a few sites and had a few different cuztomizations before finaly coming across the following on www.Dell.ca

i know thats not bad at all, but what im wondering is will that be a good enough computer for usage such as: 3D rendering, Animation and design,
Video gaming, running multiple apps.

now obviously its not going to be ABSALUTLY MIND BLOWINGLY FAST... but im simply wondering from somebody who knows more about computer specs than myself :D ... will that be enough to function with ease?

Actually, that's quite a powerful system. Compared to what most people have, that is indeed "ABSALUTLY MIND BLOWINGLY FAST".

Personally, I wouldn't touch Dell with a ten foot pole unless it was an office computer, but if you're fine with them, it's a good machine.
 
:O excellent! so anything higher than that is far beyond what i would realisticly need for years to come :) and its below my budget to! thank you - just made my day.

PS the reason i decided on Dell, is because my mother gets discount ordering through Dell through her work, so it will actually be cheaper than that :) Airmiles to...

The 9GB of RAM is intriguing, it sounds like they are using 3x 2GB sticks and 3x 1GB sticks. 9GB is probably overkill anyways, you may be better off getting 6GB of faster RAM.
 
6GB you say? and by faster i asume u meen like 2x 3gb? ill take a look.. i thought 9gb was ALOT but i dont really have anything to compare it to lol

on the same site you can buy up 24GB of RAM... why would you need anything like that for a personal computer?

for the customization of that PC there is no faster RAM.. but 6GB is quite a bit cheaper.. will 6GB be enough? i just dont want to spend to LITTLE and have to upgrade sooner than i want to.

I have another question .. and it will probably look dumb lol - which is a faster/better PC: Crazy amount of RAM for example 12GB+ with a i7 920 2.66ghz processor, OR 6GB of RAM with a i7 960 3.2 processor

for the bigger procesor and a bit less RAM(than the 9GB mentioned above)
it is an extra $300. is it worth it? will it be significantly faster/better?

oh ok... hmm... is the 1gb speed BAD? in the customization of the PC that is the highest lol. is there any other sites i should be checking out for custom PCs. i have NO experience building one i would rather order one prebuilt if possible. i currently reside in canada btw just incase anybody refers me to a russian site or something lol :D
 
Well for animation, 3D rendering, and design the amount of cores is the most important factor. As much as a solid graphics is important the cpu is what is important in this equation and you definitely have this covered.

I have to agree with [-OMEGA-]'s postion that 9 gigs is overkill. 6 gigs should do you fine and save a little money along the way or put it towards a better graphics card though 5770 is definitely decent enough.

Does this need to be a laptop, i.e. for class work and thus the need for portability?
 
Nah looking for desktop for my workstation at home. the laptop im using atm is far beyond need of updating... do you know what its like trying to run 3D rendering with 1gb of Ram on 1.6ghz ON VISTA. hahaha... not cool, not cool at all... so your saying a dual core would be better than single, and quad better than dual - even at the same Ghz?? and about the graphics card, i dont really know anything about graphics cards.. the one listed above- is that enough to run a 3D program such as maya for example without any lag? or could i achieve smoother faster results with a higher spec card? or would it not be noticable?

sorry for all the questions and you guys are so helpful for this info :)

would there be like a cap on the maximum "speed" of the computer if im using gig speed of RAM as oposed to 1.5gig??or would the sheer size of RAM (6gb or 9gb for example) make up for that?

its Alienware computer , i here alot of good things about Alienware... is it worth investing the extra $300?? what do you think?
 
Nice lookin setup, my recommendations:

1. Price it from other manufacturers - Smell isn't usually the best deal
2. Go for a slightly better video card, you'll thank yourself if you're trying to edit video and do anything in 3d
 
i dont really need the harddrive space , i have an external drive which is safer than storing everything on the internal hard drive - save myself some money :) .. do you meen taking alook at other alien sites? - oh by the way i can get a discount using DELL (not sure how much) and what sort of graphics card spec would you recomend?
 
i mean check same system specs from hp, acer, other custom builders
send a quote request on my site if you'd like www.rawcomputers.ca (i dont post quotes on here)
i'd recommend the radeon 5850 or better, depending on your budget
 
And after 30 days ditch McAfee. And RC's recommendation of the 5850 is an excellent one if you can afford it.

Quad is quite fine and the RAM will do you well.
 
the next step up i see is actually 5870, that should be great :)

its a bit more money... kinda over the edge of my budget... :P i will have to do some more research and consult my financial adviser :eek: -jk that would be me LOL. well thank you very much for all your advise, i now know what i will need for my perfect computer :D

Can't wait to actually start using a new computer , i will have to sacrifice my current laptop in honur XD ...maybe i will ask santa clause to come early :)

if you're going to push your budget with the alienware, again look elsewhere.

you're paying for dell's cheezy alien case, but you can get way better air cooling performance out of alot of better looking (imo) cases (cooler masters, thermaltakes, antec's)

one step would be pricing the parts out on newegg, tigerdirect.com, or your local computer store (even bestbuy) to see what the part would cost you retail. Then check what dell's markup is like. If you're comfortable paying go for it!

for a high end computer like that building yourself is an option - you'll still have warranty on each part from the manufacturer. If you're not comfortable building yourself talk to someone on here who does builds or find your local guy - they will be cheaper than dell for sure (ie. same computer, less money; more computer, probably less money still)

I second on ditching mcaffe - win7 comes with the option for MS Security Essentials which is awesome, way better than any mcaffe or norton product ive used to date.
