Computer Back Screen, Need Help Please

Alright so this is what happened. I had this one computer my friend put together for me. It had a radeon 6950 and a motherboard with an LGA 775 socket with a intel core 2 duo. I had a hard drive with 1tb space. A power supply of 500 watts and 2 sticks of ram both DDR3 1333/ 2 gigs each. So everything was going great, and I was playing a game on my computer and then suddenly my computer shut off on me.

I pressed the "on" switch and the computer would turn on, but it wouldn't show any display at all. All the fans and everything else inside the computer were running yet no image. I opened the computer up and I could smell smoke and a burnt mark on the motherboard. So I figured I needed a new motherboard.

So I went out and bought myself a new motherboard and a new computer case (the old one was too small). I placed all of my things in there, first with my new motherboard, and then my other components that I had on the motherboard that fried which were the cpu, video card, hardrive, ram and power supply. I made sure to connect everything properly, and then I was met with an unfortunate black screen.

I mean why would it still continue to do so..? I thought maybe it would be the power supply so I got a new one and hooked it up and still, nothing. I reseated everything and even that didn't work. I tried a different video card, one that works, and nothing. I also tried the onboard video graphics but no luck whatsover. I replaced the cpu with a working one as well and still nothing. So what's left now would be the hardrive and ram that which I haven't checked.

Would the hardrive and ram cause no image to show if they were damaged? Im afraid of the hardrive being damaged because I have important information in it. I can hear the hardrive running just fine when I boot my computer up though. I don't know what else to do, I really don't. Im thinking about bringing it to a store for them to check it and maybe they'll have some luck at it but I don't want to waste any money if I can fix it myself.

Oh one more thing, while I was building the computer inside the new case I bought, I hadn't placed my dvd disk drive yet. Is that neccesary for my computer to boot up? I wanted to leave that for last cause I wanted to see if my computer worked first (As in showing image and whatnot).

So if there's any solutions you guys think would help, please feel free to post them, I would appreciate it very much. If I can't fix it anytime soon then I'll be taking it to get checked. But I want to leave that as my last resort. Anyways, thanks and I'll check often for any replies.

Well, it seems you have 2 parts that have not replaced yet. Did you use the brass standoffs between the motherboard and case? I would suspect more of a ram issue then a hard drive being bad at this point though. You do not need a dvd drive attached for the pc to boot up.

Yeah im using the brass standoffs at the moment. I haven't tried new ram yet but I could if it might be the issue.

Other than trying to new ram and disconnecting the hard drive, those would be your only options. Sometimes a bad hard drive will cause a system to not boot up.
