so my computer is bogging down as we speak with mcafee running in the background, aim, and firefox

i have 512mb RAM right now, ignore the sig
would upgrading to a gig make multitasking better, or should I upgrade my processor to a X2?

There's got to be something else causing the problem. I can run AVG, Trillian, and firefox without any problems on my laptop. Extra RAM wouldn't hurt, but it shouldn't bog down...

Are you sure you don't have some other problem? Bad drivers? Spyware?

When copying files from a cd-r it goes much quicker doesn't it? Now go from 600-700mb max on one type of disk to 4.2gb on another. egads! There's a lot more data found there. It's like copying files from a small hard drive. The density of dvds is far greater seeing the delay from the increased amount of time to access data.

Here I work with data dvds quite often as well as dvd projects. Increasing the memory there will obviously see you back running in dual channel rather then relying totally on the one primary now being taxed. McAfee is poop! You can do far better with AVG 7.5, AntiVir, or Avast which are all free antivirus tools. I couldn't help but to add that in. As far as the 3700+ I'm running the 3500+ 939 model hare hoping to grab either an FX 60 or Opteron 185 sooner the better or later. Either one would be the move from single to dual core!

no this is a fresh build with fresh windows

it was about 2GB of movie from the DVD, it depends on what you call "bog down" because it took about 45 seconds to get firefox up, but this is all while talking on a aim conversation
what do you consider bog down?

but the question-- which should I upgrade first, RAM or CPU?

Let's make it easier. The current 2gb of Kingston Value Ram bought to replace 1gb of Corsair xms series memory on the old build is still in use on the new one here. On the next build then the need for buying memory(DDR2) will see the light of day there. But 2gb works well here even without the FX 60.
