computer boots up but cannot access hard drive

my computer boots up to cmos setting when i exit i hit , the next boot up option is safe mode or other options. when i choose any of those options an error message occurs which prevents me from access to hard drive. can any body help me.

How long has this been doing this ? Did you try and format this computer ?

What is the error message you are getting? Are you getting a blue screen of death? Does it say "unmountable boot volume"?
