computer build $240 budget without OS

I will be running either Xp 64 or windows 7. I think Im going AMD on this one, I have a $240 budget. i want to make sure im getting the best bang for my buck. I have a Hard drive and cd drive and case. I wouldnt mind a new case.

I just wana jump in here and tell you not to run XP 64 cause it's garbage. It has horrible driver support and it's buggy. Go with a 64-bit version of 7.
 
64-bit with only 2 gigs will run fine, allow you to use 64-bit programs, and allow you to add more RAM later on.

When do you plan on ordering?

once im sure its the best I can do with the money I have. Can you help me decide on witch CPU, MOBO , RAM, and power supply I should buy?
 
That will depend on what combos are available when you order. Newegg has good deals in those, but they only last for a few days at a time.
 
is the $10 more worth it for the ram? what would you recommend for a cheap power supply? should i got dual or tri core for the CPU? Should i stick with the Ninja 2 case or buy a new one? What about the mother board? should i get the cheapest one with pci-e ports and supports dual channel?
 
Just a note here! If you will look at tigerdirect.com and at Newegg for Mobo combo deals you can make your budget easily. The input you have received of 64 bit XP is solid but Windows7 has a built-in Root-kit, curtesy of the NSA's help in the development of it and unless your going to play a lot of Windows Games you do not need Windows.

Ubuntu/Linux is currently the fastest growing operating system in the world and is currently number 2 behind Windows. The latest release, Lucid Lybx, a.k.a. v. 10.04, looks, on install, like Mac and feels like Windows with an almost flat learning curve. (If you can operate Windows you can operate Ubuntu, out of the box. It comes with a complete office that is MS Office compatible, Open Office and it is free. They make their money selling support to business' and there is 24 hour a day 7 day a week support on the web... free.

Oh, did I mention that in testing it I ran it on DSL for the first two years without virus protection or a firewall without a single hitch! I do not represent the producer o0f Ubuntu but if anyone needs a leg up email me at [email protected]

I will also be using ubuntu as thats my main OS right now
