Hi there... having a bit of trouble.. trying to format my hardrive (seagate baracudda 160Gb) but occasionally the computer dosent see it.. I.E I insert the boot disk and it says there is no hardrive to format... i pull the power cable to the hardrive out then insert it again and it works.. but my install seems to keep failing so i have to format it again.. but again, the hardrive cannot be seen so i take out the power cable etc... the computers practically new! (custom build).. I got it running the other day with XP, but then it didnt work so i had to re-install which i am currently doing...

Any help?

It could be a faulty hard drive. Try and use it with a seperate computer, and see if the same thing happens. If so, I would RMA the hard drive and get a replacement from Seagate.

If it works just fine in another computer, then I would say that there is a problem with the IDE/SATA controller on the motherboard, and I would RMA the motherboard.

Oh, and while you're at it, try and use a different power connector for the hard drive.

try it with another computer good idea.. if we have a spare one.. hum.. ill try that! Ive tried it with another power adaptor.. when i take it out of the HD i switch between the two that are already on the power supply!

Hey,
Just to clarify, srobinson is my brother..

When it first stopped working, it said something about a 'kernel' and I restarted the computer as it said. After this, it couldn't read the OS off the hard drive.

I also remember seeing something on the initial error screen about 'dumping physical memory'... this got anything to do with it?
