Computer cant Math? very confusing.

I have been trying to solve this problem for awhile now, and I am at a loss for words. I have tried multiple things, i have scanned with my malwarebytesPRO that iv had for quite awhile, as well as bitdefender that I downloaded a trial of just yesterday and did a scan, it found 7 infected cookies that it deleted tha was all. I have ccleaner. and its wiping the free space as i type this.

I also have a program called 'TreeSize Free' which I will be shoing screenshots of in a moment. It basically scans my entire hard drive and shows files and folder sizes from everything even hibernating system file and the system page file, its a useful tool to see whats taking up the most space on your computer.

Now my problem here is, I have been randomly loosing free space on my hard drive. I have no idea why, for example I had 5gb of free space(this was well into my noticing of this weird stuff and trying to figure it out) and then within 5 hours(while i was gone at work) i was at 0 bytes when i got home. I then closed two chrome tabs and i jumped to 5mb, I then did nothing but get up and get a drink and I then had 7mb.

This is where it gets really weird, and where my the title of my post makes sense. Below will be two screenshots, first will be a before. taken before Sometime in the evening way before going to bed. The second will be of the next day in the morning after sleeping and some game playing.

Now as you can see from the two screenshots i go from 340GB(approx) to 343GB(approx) so that means 3gb of stuff was added to the harddrive over what id guess would be at least 12 hours, thats nothign suspicious, BUT if you look at the available freespace calculated at the bottom of the picture between then two, you will see that there is a difference of 20GB! NOT 3GB! I go from having 34.3GB of free space to 14.4GB of free space. This was a couple days ago.

These pictures are current as of a right now as im typing this. First one is of my treesize program again, showing that only 323GB is ont he drive of 465GB, yet I only have 8.8GB of free space somehow.. when that should be 130-140GB of free space. The second will show local disk properties saying that the used space is actually 456GB, of 465, which then shows 8.8GB of free space.

now the properties picture is calculating correctly, the math anyway. I originally had like 60 someodd GB and then one day I realized I was REALLY low, and thats when i realized my free space was just randomly disapearing, the amount of GB used according to TreeSize program is correct by my approximete calculations of what I had before I noticed this happening and then the constant deleted of old materials just to keep myself from hitting 0 bytes.

So please hopefully someone can help me and figure this out, cause im at a loss. also its not pagefile system memory thing I have that manually set to 4096 max, and tree size also sees the file and it plus hibernation is no larger then 14gb combined and its held steady at that size the entire time through this.

Check your system restore drive space. Its under advanced system settings/system protection. What percentage of the drive do you have it set at?

That app doesn't seem very good. Download and run Windirstat instead. It does much better folder layouts than the crap you're running.

Is there anything strange popping up in your taskbar? I'm thinking one of those viruses/infected files messed with your system restore settings.

This. SpaceSniffer is decent as well.

I will grab the program and run that and see whats up, I didnt mention it in my op post, but I have also checked recovery, but I will check it again, and no nothing weird in my taskbar, as I said I ran bitdefender and it found 7 infected cookies and cleared those out, I also have had malwarebytes PRO on my computer for a very long time and it has not detected anything either.

As I mentioned in previous post I had checked this, but I was gonna check again anyway, and as I remember i had set it down to 1% and cleared all previous restore settings, as this was one of my early attemps. According to the same screen 0bytes is used for it still.

Alright, as requested i picked up WinDirStat, and SpaceSniffer. after making my original post I deleted a game off my computer to give myself some more space, so the amount of space the harddrive is using has gone down abit, by about 40gb I believe it was, but since coming home from work, low and behold im mising about 8-10GB of that free space i freed up right before leaving for work.

ANYWAY I have scanned using all three programs, I will post pictures in order of WinDirStat first, SpaceSniffer second, and TreeSize third.

Using both spacesniffer and windirstat I was able to show both free space, and 'Unknown' space, Treesize is unable to show me this. So now I know where the my free space ahs been going, its been going into this 'Unknown Space' section, question is why, and how can i get it back, and YES I ran as admin on both of those, if people think its necesary I can always safe mode it and run these both from admin profile to see if that makes any difference.

The variance is the page file reflecting the system restore points (system volume information). Fix your page file, and restore point size and use ccleaner to clean up, then see how it fares.

Actually if you read my op post and subsequent posts since, youd see iv already done all of that, also pagefile and hiber.sys are not using anymore then 14gb the entire time through this, infact my latest post shows and reflects where all ym space is going, I just need to know why and how, and how the hell to get it from being unknown.

As I said previously, that unknown space is the System Volume Information associated with restore points. They're system files that cannot be accessed, and therefore 'counted'. Other files may be there too, however it is primarily SRPs and some binary.

How do I go about fixing pagefile and restore points then?, because I have no restore points, that system is using 0 bytes and is set to 1%, pagefile is manually set to 4096 already. and iv run ccleaner already.

My free space is still declining, I managed to free up another 15gb's or so, because I was at 4gb this morning, so now im at 19gb left.. The free space is slowly just turning into unknown space, and I even went to safe mode and scanned using windirstat and it showed the unknown space as unknown still... what is going on..

You have to be able to access sytsem files. Do this by viewing hidden files/folders and then granting access to yourself via the security properties.

is anybody reading, or even looking at the pictures thoroughly before responding? all of this that has been done, i can see all my hidden files and folders, I even in safe mode unhid all of the system files and folders so i could even see the desktop.cfg or .sys file on my desktop its still unknown space, I have lost 170gb of space over the last two weeks to 'unknown space'

Can you click on the unknown and have it scan for files? I've never used that program so don't know. It is possible that you have some sort of infection going on. Let me know if you would like to go down that route.

Right clicking on the unknown section doesnt do anything, I cant do anything with the unknown section, but I shall try again. If I do have an infection its very hard to find, I have malwarebytesPRO as iv said for some time now, and it detects nothing, and I grabed bitdefender total and ran a complete system scan it detected 7 infected internet cookies and promptly deleted them, I have been trying to runa nother scan, but it keeps slowing down and freezing up, which doesnt suprise me since my hardrives space keeps disapearing.

I'm going to install kaspersky in a little while, to see if maybe it will have better luck on the scanning department
