computer companies ripping you off?

i noticed that a lot of computers seem to have less ram than they claim. my friend has a laptop that was supposed to come with 1gb of ram. dxdiag says it has 894mb. which is telling the truth?

Sometimes ram is allocated to be used for the video memory so it will only show up the rest that is available in this case 894.

yeah but then i would guess you could take into consideration that 1 gig is just bigger than 1bill bytes i think it takes that into account not sure

Your friend's laptop has a 128mb video chip in it, that is taking away that memory.

but yeah computer companies do rip people off, the only way to get around it is to build your own, but your stuck on the laptop

128MB is given to somthing else his computer has 1GB

well for a long time people have known that Computers are overpriced for what they really are its nothing new

there are up sides to buying a ready made comp

Yeah it all depends on what hardware is readily accessing that memory. So technically they are not ripping you off they are providing the 1 gigabyte of RAM.
