Computer crashes

Hi fellas lately my pc crashes while I do multi-tasking. For example if I am running a DVD burning software like ConvertXtoDVD and play music at the same time, the computer restarts. What could cause this? I have the following:

XP pro
DFI Lanparty NF4 mobo
AMD 64 3500
BFG 7800 gt
2 GB RAM

I think I have 500W power supply. How do I find out?

Take of one side of Your case - and read it from the label on PSU :)
or even better, take a pic of it if you're not sure what you're looking for

Typically it would either be powere related, as stated, or be associated with overheating, seeing as its not in games, then it would be your CPU, whilst you have your case open i would just check to see if the fans etc... are all still running smoothly and if there is an extreme build up dust anywhere, get rid of it...

If you can, reapply the heatsink/fan on the CPU

my cpu idles at 45C

I'm not too sure, but I think that's a little hot for a CPU, I'd recommend maybe putting some extra fans in the case, just to cool it down some, I'm not too sure, but the power supply could be the problem also.

Idle temps mean nothing in this situation, because the problem only exists under load, as you already stated.

Have you got a picture or some details on your PSU yet?

yes it is 550W. Some people say do a memory so I ran memtest. It ran for over 5 hours, doing 9 cycles. I finally had to cancel it. How long does memtest take?

OK so I did a thorough research and found out that my CPU can handle temps of up to 60C. My memory is OK. My power supply is OK. I did a defrag just to see if it helps but I still have the same problem. Now what?

550w means absolutely nothing, you would need to know the amperage on the voltage rails, specifically the +12v rail for anyone here to estimate if it is underpowering the system.

Well, you ran through it 9 times, thats long ewnough. there is no definite end to thigns like memtest86, they just keep running and testing the RAM in didfferent ways until you tell it to stop. I take it it didn't come up with any errors or corruption?

My power supply is OK.
How do you figure?
