Computer doesnt turn on. PLEASE HELP

Hi im new here and dont really know what else i can do. here are my specs
Motherboard Asus K8N-E deluxe socket 754
CPU AMD athlon 64
nvidia gforce 6600

heres the problem last night i left my computer on and ate dinner when i returned 20 minutes later it was off, i assumed it was just in sleep mode and i tried to bring it out however nothing happened. I unplugged it and tried plugging it back in, nothing. no lights, no fans, nothing. so i thought maybe its the power supply i traded my power supply for another but same result nothing. i also put my psu in another comp and it fired up. so it cant be the psu.

i took all the stuff out and reseated it all, still nothing, i reconnected the mobo and i got a green led to come on but otherwise nothing. i tested the power button and it appears to work, it shows a reading on an ohm meter so i am guessing that is is functioning properly. this only leaves me with what i can think is one option and that is a faulty cpu. but i examined it and it looks fine.
Mobo also looks fine no burn marks or anything and it isnt shorting,ive tested for it. im just at a loss for what else i can do please help
 
One thing to consider was an overheating of the main chipset or bios eprom. A failed cpu wouldn't stop a message coming up on screen or an audio alert with a continuous beeping sound. If you have had the board for longer then a year another thing that would stall a system is the lithium battery on the board itself. Usually that will stop a system from starting when it gets too weak not shut it down. But the alternate would mean replacing the bios or board if that failed.
 
im sorry but im not familiar with what the bios eprom is but as for the other two suggestions, would the battery keep the system from starting at all like i described. ie. with the only sign of life being the led light on the motherboard, and as for the main chipsets that would just mean getting it replaced, correct?

also i failed to mention it initially but the fans have been louder than normal for the past month or so, almost annoyingly loud, which i dont remember being the case initially
 
Having the battery dead I don't think it would keep it from show any thing on the screen just not remember the time and some hardware
 
so what options would you say i have. im pretty sure its under warranty so should i just try and get it replaced
 
A battery can give you some headaches if it was bad from the start. Sometimes a good one will last upto 5yrs. without a hitch. But if this is a new build with the 754 model under warranty take advantage of it. After that you would have to order a new bios chip directly from the manufacturer. I still have an older Socket A board that needs one sitting around here. Before the bios want bad the original battery simply quit. Nothing was seen at the time on screen. It looked doa until a replacement battery went in.
 
this build is about 1 yr 3months or so. so i would be kind of weird if it went out so soon, especially since its the newest pc out of 4 in my house and the others havent had any problems....where can i get a replacement battery at? i guess its worth a shot assuming its not too expensive
 
I'm not surprised to see a battery go in that amount of time especially if you get a lot of use out of it. On most makes and models the CR2032 lithium type battery is sold where you get electronic watches and electronic calculators. The battery itself should have a number right on it. The owner's manual should have the correct battery number there too. It's a standard button shaped battery available at most stores like Target, BestBuy, Walmart, and in the section where watches or calculators are seen. Walmart sells a pair for like $3. They don't cost much.

When it happened here on the old case it was after being turned off overnight where I went to turn it on and "nothing". I always manage to keep a few extras around since that time. The best thing to do is bring the old one with you due to a need at times to cross reference numbers. You may see something like iaxxxx-2032 instead of cr2032 on it if that is the correct number. The 2032s are more commonly used then others while you still have to match it for the correct one.
 
allright ill try that and get back to you tom. and you said previously that it wouldnt cause the comp to shut down however, if i have it set to shut the hd and monitor off after 30 min or so in order to save power, so if this was the case then could the dead battery have just caused it to never boot back up
 
Did you match the battery correctly? The battery was a quick way to test that out regardless. For you to see it shut down totally for no reason it would then be either an overheated component or something like the bios chip simply quit on you. Now you are looking at a board failure. A dead battery would fail to see anything come up on screen since that wipes the cmos. But for no audio alerts for a bad cpu, memory, or video card you are looking at the other two items on the list namely the bios or main chipset.
 
either of those would require replacing the motherboard right?


forgot to mention, i matched up the battery correctly, although i figured it would be to easy of a fix:)

If the board is still under manufacturer's not vendor's warranty you would have to ship it directly to them for service or replacement. The bios chip is about a $25 item to order direct from Asus for an older Socket A board here. That only takes a special tool to insert into the chip socket for those due to the delicate catapillar type leads on those. The main chipset is a different story.
