My current configuration is realllly slow when it comes to editing RAW photo files. I have been looking at several systems and was wondering if there would be any significant difference in these two systems. There is a $300 cost difference.

System #1
Hard Drive: 160GB 7200RPM 3G SATA II Hard Drive
Video / Graphics Cards: GeForce 8400GS 256MB PCI-Express (1DVI / 1VGA)
Processors: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz 4M 1333 Processor
Motherboards: Asus P5KPL-CM mATX Motherboard with HD Audio
Memory: 4GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz Memory (2GB x 2)

VS.

System #2
Hard Drive: 160GB 7200RPM 3G SATA II Hard Drive
Video / Graphics Cards: GeForce 8400GS 256MB PCI-Express (1DVI / 1VGA)
Processors: Intel Core i5-750 2.66GHz 8M LGA1156 Processor
Memory: 8GB DDR3 PC3-10600 1333MHz Memory (2GB x 4)
Motherboards: MSI P55-CD53 ATX Motherboard

Thanks for your time!

Here's a Benchmark comparison to some Core 2 Quad CPU's to the core i5 for photoshop rendering

Our Photoshop CS4 test runs through a series of thread-aware filters, though the Core i7-870’s clock rate advantage seems to propel it through the metric faster than any of the other CPUs. The Core i5-750 and Core i7-920 turn back comparable scores, though both are narrowly edged out by Intel’s Core 2 Extreme.

C2Quad 8300 would be slower than the C2Q 9550 on the benchmarks.

I don't have any experience with Photo editing - so I'll leave the interpretation up to you and others who weigh in.

The 2nd system is superior, and will be more upgradable in the future. Personally I would think that it's worth the extra $300.

How much memory, speed of memory and CPU processor are the main advantages where photo editing is concerned. Graphics card does not play a vital role in this (unless it's really crap):)
