Computer for video editing

I'm building a computer for a friend... His main purpose for the computer is video editing so i'm looking for a very good mobo/cpu/ram. the limit is around $2000. so if anyone could give me some recommendations that would be awesome

Are you wanting an entire build or just suggestions on what you mentioned?

Assuming the program supports OpenGL acceleration, you'll want a decent GPU as well.

the software he will mostly be using is adobe premiere/after effects cs4, not sure if opengl is supported there... i just want a recommendation on mobo, cpu, ram, and video card that will total under $2000

All Adobe products support GPU accelleration. Check this out:

So you want JUST the mobo, CPU, RAM, and GPU to be under 2k? What other parts are being used?

yea... by parts, you mean like, other cards? the only thing would probably be the sound which is the creative X-Fi Elite Pro which is pcix 1x I believe. yea so mobo/cpu/ram and gpu. oh and i want 4 monitor outputs

By other parts I mean Case, Hard drive(s), power supply, and optical Drive, as well as anything else you'll use.

I find it funny sometimes how the computer I have now is not top of the line for video editing, but two years ago it would have been the best of the best. :)

2 500gb hard drive, a case under $100, and 900 watt power supply, nothing for the optical drives

You already have that, or it's what you're getting?

If you already have it, what PSU? If it's a cheapie you'll want another....and editing rig can really stress a PSU and cheaper ones will most likely fail.

Also, will the video editing be on all four monitors, or would a second cheaper GPU be ok to drive two of them?

This should do it.

(prices include shipping, btw)

OS- Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OEM- $140

CPU- Core i7 920- $289

Mobo- Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R- $210

RAM- Corsair XMS3 1600 3x2GB- $180

GPU- 2x XFX Radeon HD5850- $616

PSU- Corsair 950TX 950W- $150 (before $10 rebate)

Hard Drives- 2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB- $110 (newegg's out)

Case- Actec Twelve Hundred- $175 ( a little pricey, but will cool this rig like no other)

Total- $1870 before rebates

This is a pretty monstrous rig, and will power through any editing software even if it has no GPU support. However, those GPU's will speed up the editing process imensely. Or one of them at least....I'm not sure if CS4 can use two of them at once for acceleration.

Also, I know you said you didn't want one, but I'd get a good DVD burner to go with it...they're fairly cheap. Here's a great one with Lightscribe for $34:
Lite-On iHAS424-98
