Computer freezing at startup and during games. Help?

I have just built a new computer and have been having some problems with it. When it starts up, a lot of the time right after the windows loading screen before the windows vista icon comes up, it will freeze and won't go any farther. i then have to restart my computer. also, when i do get my computer up and running, if i go to play a game such as farcry or crysis, it will freeze in the middle of playing one of those games too. the computer will not shut down on its own or go to a blue screen. it will just sit there on the same screen and again, i will have to restart my computer using the startup button. does anyone have any suggestions to what i could do or what could be the problem?

my system specs:
Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU
4GB DDR2 Corsair Memory
XFX GeForce 9800 GTX GPU
550W Rosewill power supply
MSI P45 Neo3 FR motherboard
750GB Hitachi HDD

and if you need anything else on my specs to see if thats the problem, just ask.

1. Is it overclocked? if it is, clock down back to standard speeds and try running it again.

2. Try scheduling a disk check on boot.
to do this:
Start Menu > run...
type "cmd" and hit enter
type "chkdsk /F"
it will most likely ask to run the disk check upon boot and just enter yes
reboot

no im not overclocking it. i was going to once i got it up and running but i havent even messed with that yet.
i guess ill try the disk check but i dont know if that will do anything because its happened on 2 hard drives. i'll check though.

i just did the disk check and it didnt find any problems because after it was done it just restarted.
ive also been thinking that it might be that my powersupply does not give enough volts for an output or that my motherboard has something wrong with it but i dont know of any ways to test that. are there any ways?

Crashing during games could be caused by improper cooling. Download and run Everest, it should show temps, and then post your temps here.

ok. ill try that but it still doesnt explain why my computer would freeze at the startup would it?
and later i am going to install a watercooling system in it. as long as i can figure out how to.

But there could be multiple reason why your computer is freezing, it is possible that the reason why your computer freezes at startup is completely independent of the cause of freezing in-game.

ffreezing at startup can relate to freezing in game if its a heat issue, because dont forget your cpu and memory are worknig hard on boot up to load all the processes and starup items dont forget so they will get heated then too. So yes download everest and report temps

after running a stress test on my computer for the cpu for 1hr and 12 mins, the temps were:
Mobo-35.4
CPU-37.6
Core 1- 47.8
core 2-47
core 3-44.1
core 4-44.4
HDD-40.3
im not thinking that its a problem with the temps then. but the problem is that sometimes when i let my computer sit for over a half hour sometimes it will freeze, and after the hour and 12 minutes that i let the stress test run, it froze. so i dont know what is happening.

and also, i havent run any memory tests but i have tried 2 different sets of memory and the same thing happened for both.

so does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do here with all that information? if you need any other info just ask. i really want to solve my problem.
