Computer freezing, check disk finds errors

For about a month, my computer was intermittently running poorly, showing signs such as:
- Slow bootup (like 5 minutes)
- Programs freezing
- Windows freezing

Last week, my computer froze up and on reboot, ran chkdsk automatically. It found tons (hundreds?) of errors. After the errors were fixed, my computer ran much better.

So, today my computer started exhibiting the same signs, so I ran check disk again. Sure enough, it found errors, though not as many this time.

Aside from a hard drive going bad, what might be causing this?

My computer: Windows Vista, 3 GB RAM, Intel Core Duo quad core 2.x ghz.

What kind of HDD do you have?
You should download the diagnostic utility from the HDD manufacture's website and run a few scans to check the reliability of your HDD.

It could also be malware or bad RAM but I suggest you back up important files in case your hard drive suddenly fails.

What were you doing before these symptoms started happening (any new programs install, new hard ware installed, did you knock your PC over? ...)

Your drive seems to be going south.
Make sure, you back up your data as soon, as possible.

Then...

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pa...rivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE

Thanks!

I wondered about the RAM, too, as I have noticed that sometimes when programs start slowly, it's like it takes forever to load them into RAM. I'll open task manager and watch and only like 1,000K per second loads, so it takes awhile for the entire program to load.

I already have nightly backups setup.

I will see about running a hard drive diagnostic. Thanks.
