Computer Freezing Frequently

My friends problem:
I've got a problem recently, it's insane, not sure if it's a virus or what. Well here is the problem: I start up my computer, it loads into the desktop, after 10-30 seconds, the computer freezes, can't move your mouse, can't ctrl+del+alt, even if the computer was working on something, such as opening a program, it still freezes. Some other time, it freezes little later after loading into the desktop. Any idea what's wrong? Also happens to freeze when I load up games such as WC3 or WoW which takes a lot of memory.
 
Sounds to me like one of the four following:
1. Overheating Issue - Check Temps
2. Single Specific Isolated Hardware Issue - Take out non-essentials, try older video card
3. Driver Issue - Safe mode/updates/recent changes
4. Memory Issue - Run Memtest86.
 
Well, does it freeze at all now, such as running basic apps in the Windows environment?
