Computer freezing, no BSOD

Hi all
I recently had my computer started freezing up, most noticeably whenever some sort of music/sound is on. It used to actually take a while to happen, say a few hours into whatever i'm doing, which included music/sound in the background. Say I was playing a game and had music playing off itunes. Or the game itself had music encoded in the game.
Anyways, what would happen is that the music/sound would freeze and repeatedly repeat itself, like it was stuck. The computer would freeze, all buttons, all programs, etc. Never did I get a blue screen of death. At first I thought it was a specific song, and so I deleted it, but it kept on happening.
Now I'm not new to computers, I built this computer from the ground up. And never had I had this problem. When it started getting "annoying", I reformatted the entire computer, backed up my things, etc. Except, now, that I have everything back, the problem still persists, and the time period is even shorter now, maybe 10 minutes at most.
Is there some sort of problem with my sound card/driver? It's a Realtec model, on the ASUS a8r-mvp E deluxe motherboard. I downloaded the driver straight from the ASUS website, so I'm assuming it shouldn't be the cause of the problems. =/
I used a windows xp media edition 2005 dvd to reinstall everything.
Anyone have any thoughts? I'd really appreciate it, so I can get back to a normal lifestyle on my computer :)

It happen to me before. After I do a check to my pc, the prob was the harddisk. Thanks God it not my harddisk going to dead, it just lack of power supply.

the whole computer freezes up? Sounds like somting is dying. Do you have another computer to swap parts with? If you do, try each individual part. If not, start with removing each stick of RAM, then test each one by putting it in and see if it happens again.

What about somehow testing the motherboard? I mean this was a fresh install! There should be no problem with drivers and the sort.
I also can keep my computer on for extended periods of time with no issue. The only time something freezes is if sound/music if involved. Muting does nothing lol.
I will try swapping RAM out and seeing how that goes. But I'd really like not replacing my MOBO, b/c I'd have to find one that is compatible with my CPU, etc etc.

I know how that goes...

What I DONT know is how to test the mobo other than use another CPU. What kind of CPU and MOBO you got? And even though it was a fresh install, your drivers may be too old. Is there a PC shop near by? If you cant do it any other way, then I would suggest you call one and see if they know what the problem could b e. Of course, only go their with the computer if you cant fix it yourself, because they charge a crap load for EVERYTHING!

I'm guessing it's because of the hard drive. I've had similar problems before when playing music the sound and the system would stutter (it wouldn't repeat itself like for you) and be completely unusable but not completely unresponsive. The only way to stop it would be the reset button. I backed up all the data and switched drives and everything worked fine.

For troubleshooting you could try a different hard drive in the same system and see if it has the same problem.

Yes. I also mention that. it harddisk problem.

Well I guess I could check w/ another HD.
I have an a8r-mvp e deluxe mobo, with dual core amd 4600+
the drivers are ALL updated, either through mobo site or through windows updates.
I am not overclocking.
And I'd rather not buy another CPU... Might be a hassle to try to find one compatible w/ my mobo, it's at least 2-3 years old...

I will try out a different hard drive.

For now, I've taken out the mem chips, and swapped them around, and still the same problem, with about 5 minutes into a game, Lock up.

However, I can watch full length movies, anime, etc, leave my computer on for days, and NOT lock up.

I just don't understand what the real issue is.

Is it only doing during gaming and times off stress?

If so then it could be, as you say HDD, but also i think it is pointing towards PSU failure. If it can't supply clean power when your system needs it most then faults, such as freezeing, will begin to occur.

Is the power supply the one that came with your case/system or is it one that you bought, and if so what power supply is it? Also do you know the rating (wattage) and what are the components of your system?

the PSU is the one i bought w/ the computer, never had a problem like this before....

and before the clean install, the freezing would be intermittent, but after the clean install, and all updates/drivers/direct X, the freezing is like within 5-10 minutes of the games.

the PSU is toughpower 600W thermaltake. I think that's enough no? Plus, it doesn't freeze if i watch movies or keep the computer on for extended periods of time..

HOWEVER, something else also comes up: every once in a while, during bootup, it says that my computer can't be "overclocked", even though the clock-speed HAS never been touched since i've had the computer, meaning it's at normal clock speed. Is something over-heating to the point where it causes my computer to lock when i play a game?

i just played a game for about 30 minutes before freezing.

the window and fan has been blowing all evening, with the computer off, so I think it might be some sort of heating issue, since the computer would have been hella cold before i turned it on?
Though when i look at all my fans, they seem to be all on and running.
So maybe when the temperature gets too hot, the computer just dumps and locks? that's the only reason i can think of, considering this new event.

could this be something to do w/ my HD getting too hot? or my CPU? my graphics cards don't have a fan, so i don't think it would be the graphics card issue. i DID take one of them out though, right before i played the game for thirty minutes.

but this is just weird that it might be a heating issue, when i can leave the computer on for days and it will be fine =/.
