Computer freezing or reboots, reboots past my SSD unless I hard boot

Hello, Just today my PC has been acting up. It will either lock up completely or reboot on its own. The only other symptom I had to this was a lag in typing while in Thunderbird (I do almost all my typing there so can't say if other programs were the same).

If it reboots on it's own the BIOS won't see the SSD but will see my mirrored 2tb drives and boot off of those. If I boot from a powered down state it will see my SSD drive and boot off of it, but within an hour the computer will freeze or reboot again.

I did manage to create an image from my SSD to my 2tb drives just in case.

Is my SSD drive failing? TIA

Win 7 32, Crucial M4 64gb SSD, 4gb ram, Intel 2500, OCZ 600W

Thx for the reply. I download both those programs but I'm not sure I used them correctly. Crystal is showing the drive as "good 96%" and hddscan didn't show any problems that I could find.

Given the sporadic nature of my problem, not sure what to think at this point. My computer is working as I type, but it's just a matter of time till it locks or reboots.

Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

Power Supply?

I just had an interesting symptom, the computer shut down on a reboot attempt. Wouldn't that indicate a Power Supply problem? I also noticed that, on the last lock up, the mouse pointer worked but I just couldn't click on anything. The keyboard didn't work either (ctrl-alt-del doesnt' work).

Another clue. I was using the computer without the SSD (booted without recognizing it) and after about an hour of use (on the mirrored drives) it shut down.

Bad power supply? or something else? memory? tia.

Can you immediately turn it back on after its abruptly shuts off on you? Power supply may be failing. Have you checked all your connections? How old is this build?

Yes, I was able to reboot right after it froze, just moments ago. I built the system just over two years ago. Reseated all the connections earlier today.

Another clue. It began to power up then off before the display turned on. did that 3 times in about 15 seconds.

Another clue. With every thing unlugged except the video card and ssd it froze up on me again. On soft reboot it didnt see the ssd again. On hard reboot it booted ok.

Windows memory diagnostic didnt turn up anything. Maybe psu?? main board???

Ok, try this. Unplug power suppy, remove cmos battery on motherboard, press the power button on the case for 10 seconds. Then wait 10 minutes. Reinsert battery, reconnect power and try booting up.

ok did that, but now it wont boot. Not sure what happened but it asked something about useing the last known bios (???), then tried to boot windows. Then i recd a blue screen saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...." let me know if you want to know the resst of that message.

I rebooted and opted for startup repair which gave the result "startup repair connot repair this computer automatically". Now it won't boot, just gets to the blue screen.

Check your bios settings for the sata controller setting. You were probably running AHCI mode and windows won't boot if its set to IDE or sata mode.

with the bios settings cleared i cant boot from the ssd or my mirrored drives. i was never very good at all this to begin with, and cant temember how i got this all pieced together in the first place. throw in a faulty piece of hardware and im in way over my head. im going to bring this in to microcenter to see if they can help me out. ill post here again after that. thx for the help so far.

In order to boot back into your raid drives you need to enable raid in the bios. After you restart it should boot into the raid. Does the bios detect the ssd now?

bios: pch sata control mode = RAID (xhd). So i plugged all drives back in and the bios recognized everything, windows popped up message "checking file system on.... One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.... I think it ran chkdsk and then booted right into windows.

Just prior to this it had trouble powering up. I pressed the power button and the fans started to hum and then shut down. I had to press the power button again to get it to go. Isnt that a sign of a bad power supply? Any way to chek that? or should i just buy a new one since its so easy to install.

The problem seems to be cured by either a new power supply or the steps provided by okedokey. I've been running all day without issues. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you had an issue with the power supply to be honest. Probably a bad sata power connector.

Possibly, but the crucial update ran chkdsk and recovered orphaned files: tasks_~1.xpi, tasks_mails-2.2.t-tb, tb_free.exe, THUNDE~1.EXE, Thunderbird setup 9.0.1.exe, TOOLBO~1.EXE, ToolBox_4911mf12_win_EN.exe, WALNUT~1.JAR, walnut2_for_thunderbird-1.8.78-tb.jar, WINMAI~1.EXE, winmail_opener.exe

and possibly a few more files I might have missed as I was taking pictures with my camera. One other thing, my computer did lock up with the new power supply at which point I performed the 4 steps listed by okedokey. Perhaps I should have done that first, but no regrets, as having an extra power supply will probably come in handy at some point. Hopefully with the new drivers and recovered files I won't have any more issues. Thx again for your help, it's greatly appreciated.
