Hey friends,

I am facing very irritating issue with my computer. For last 2 weeks, my computer is freezing/hanging randomly, whenever I do internet activity or my modem is on. I first suspect, it was act of virus. So I got my system checked for the same.

Even I thought there is any disk issue. Like HDD failure, but upon checking disk by freeware disk checker, I didn't noticed any problem.

I am getting same behavior for winodws xp as well as ubuntu. And I noticed that system freezes only if I am connected to internet ( I mean modem is on).

Could that be a problem. Could you tell me, how can i find the root cause.

Thanks.

Are you using the ethernet port on your motherboard, or are you using a network card?

What computer are you using, and if you do have a network card you are using, what brand/model is it? If you aren't sure because it is a pre-built system, then what manufacturer/model is the computer? We can find out what it has from there.

Finally, was it at any point working properly without hanging?

Hi,

I am attaching CPUz log.
Code:

Well to summarize it;

Are you using the ethernet port on your motherboard, or are you using a network card?
Yes. I am using ethernet on motherboard.

What computer are you using, and if you do have a network card you are using, what brand/model is it? If you aren't sure because it is a pre-built system, then what manufacturer/model is the computer? We can find out what it has from there.
I am using Intel assembled PC. I had assembled it 2.5 years ago.

Finally, was it at any point working properly without hanging?
Yes. I have obtained internet connection and using it without problem since last 1 year. I am getting these troubles since last two weeks.

And I am connecting to cable via ethernet only. Its a adsl modem. It connects to the PC via ethernet chord.

Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop: http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe

Double-click VEW.exe then under Select log to query, select:
Application
System

Under Select type to list, select:
Critical (Vista only)
Error

Click the radio button for Number of events
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

In Notepad, click Edit > Select all then Edit > Copy
Reply to this post, click in the reply window and press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the log.

Hey I have attached vew log. Even I went through logs, didn't get any clue.

I dont think there is any problem with processor or hard disk. Because, I can still play graphics card required games like call of duty (modern warfare 2) . So I suspect there must be either problem with network card (on mobo) or modem itself. Something related to handshaking..

If you could find problem from logs. let me know. If my computer hangs up again. I will post, immediate logs.

Well, couple possible culprits.
Some network configuration seems to be incorrect, to begin with.
Let's start with this error:
This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

Go Start>Run, type in:
services.msc
Click OK.
Find Netlogon service.
Right click on it, click "Properties" and under "Startup type" change it to "Disable" in drop-down menu.

Restart computer.
Check your internet issues.

Hi,
I tried your above way. Still I am facing similar issue. Here is my log just after my computer got hanged.

1 more observation:
If I put some static ip for router. I am not facing this issue. Though I am not completely sure. But computer has not hanged, if I have entered any static local router ip in lan properties ( like 192.168.1.49)

This solves my problem partially, but still I am facing issue at Ubuntu side.

I don't like DNS setting...

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

Post fresh log from ipconfig /all

Sorry for late reply. I have now resetted the modem. Yet to see freezing. BTW this is my ipconfig/all output
