computer freezing whilst gaming

Hi,

I have just built a new PC (the one in my sig) and I'm having a litttle trouble: when in games like Quake4 or CSS I get this kind of lagg, my screen will sort of freeze for a couple of seconds and then catch up to where I would have been going given the amount of time I hold my finger on 'walk'.

My temps are okay, I have the latest BIOS, graphics drivers etc. Even when playing Quake3 the other day the same thing happened.

Anyone had this problem? and does anyone know how to solve it?

Regards & hello all (my second post)

Could it be something to do with my monitor refresh rate? I just checked in the setting and it was set to 60hz, I have an option to set it upto 75hz, In some games (quake3 especially) Im getting 200fps, in CSS upto 140-150.

Could there be a conflict with my refresh rate? and also shoudl I adjust my refresh rate to 75hz?

Was this in multiplayer? and do you have dial-up? Sometimes my games freeze for a second every now and then, buts its usually because my ping jumped or a laggy server.

sorry, should have mentioned earlier, I was playing online but my connection is 1mb BB and my pings are pretty good, I mentioned about the refresh rate thing because Im sure I read somewhere (maybe even here) that you FPS ould not be more than your refresh rate or something along them lines.

Yea your FPS can certainly be higher then your refresh rate. I would set it to 75hz simply because I like that setting :). 60hz is on the threshold of being too low which might cause headaches but 75hz seems to be the sweet spot. I've heard that also about the FPS and refresh rate and I have to admit I don't fully understand just what in the heck they are trying to say ;). I think what they are thinking is FPS is basically how many frames are drawn in your game per second, refresh rate effects how often your screen is drawn. This does not change the fact though that we get over 200FPS in Quake 3 while our refresh rates are much lower.

it might be to do with the detail settings you have on the games you mention. try dropping them a little. what i think is happening is that the game is accessing virtual memory on the hard drive and this is the lag you are experiencing.

I know my specs are not the best but I figure they should at least handle q3 with ease (I also have a pretty comprehensive config with is FPS orientated and not detail), I built the PC to runs games more easily and was hoping to play with higher detail, Is there any other way I can stop my computer accessing virutal memory?

Im gonna try clocking my FPS to 65 and see how I get on, Any other advice People have of any sort would be great.

Thank you to all who have replied so far.

so you're not gonna try it? it would be helpful as a test to determine whether or not you need more memory :)

I have ran the games on a fraction of the setup I have now without this problem, as I stated I use a low detail config in Quake3 and I still get this problem so I dont think the detail is the problem, I just had a quick game of CSS and clocked my FPS to 65 and I still get the same porblem. The problem is the same on all games however demanding there are, I can run quake3 on a laptop with 512 ram and 3.2ghz cpu and only a 32mb fx go 5200 card and still get 200fps and no lag, apart from the detail I can now get with a better spec I am probably worse off than I was.

Even playing Half life 2 yesterday on single player mode I get the same problem, Could something be faulty and is there some software I can run to get an analysis of what may be at fault.

Shouldnt 1gig of RAM be enough to run all these games comfortably, all except quake4 maybe.

defragged recently? that could be a factor, other than that i can think what it could be.... you could try swapping between other hardware to see whats causing the problem

I have just defragged and the drive is back to 100%, does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem, I am getting desperate now hehe, throw anything at me and I will try it!

Also please bare in mind that this is a new build and my first new build at that, its probably soemthing stupid I have forgotten to do, but through lack of experience in this field I cant troubleshoot it myself

I cant find an answer anywhere, try googling '6800gt freezing' and the amount of results across fourms is unbelievable. I have tried idsbaling 'fast writes' with rivatuner but that never worked so I enabled it again, does anyone wanna have another pop at this? Could I get my money back or a replacement from ebuyer.co.uk do you think? I think given the amount of other problems I have read about today which all relate to the 6800gt card its hard to place the blame anywhere else, would that be grounds enough to get a replacement?
