computer gaming

so i quit gaming on the computer for a long time really since i got my xbox 360 so needless to say i havnt kept up with the new technology computer wise.. so to the point. i want to build a new gaming rig due to mine being so dated about 2 years since i last upgraded it... my current set up is an AMD X2 4000+ 4 gig of ram two 250 gig hard drives in raid 0 with an nvidia 7800gt graphics card for the life of me i cant remember what mb im running and don't feel like looking i know it was an AM2 socket though ... ok so obviously thats not worth upgrading. so im gonna start fresh only thing i plan on reusing is one of the disk drives the case its self which is an atx case .... my budget is $1500+ or - a few dollars. i was thinking an intel core 7 but i really don't know. any suggestions would be great...
 
I don't think you mention if Gaming is the Only real heavy duty stuff you'll be using the rig for. If so you might want an i5?

plus Win7 gets you to $1455. Just one attempt, other people will have suggestions. I've heard good things about 460 sli, for instance. Others are waiting on the 6xxx ATI cards to see how they are, and where prices are at after the release.

I think you would be better off with i7 920/930 instead of the i7 950. But the rig above looks good though.
 
only other thing i would be doing is video encoding takes about 3 hours for me to do 2hrs of h.264 right now

edit also i have a thermaltake tsunami case i plan on re using so that should save me a few dollars unless anyone sees a real reason i should upgrade it

950 has fallen in price a hell of alot, putting it at near the same as a 920/930, at some places making it cheaper, so sticking with a 950 if using a 1366 system would be the best way to go

instead, $10 saved and you get a better cooler

You could also ditch the dual 460 idea and go for a single GTX480 or HD5870:

would save you a fair bit of money ($10 with the 480 after MIR, $80 with the 5870)

Well if there is a place that he can find it cheaper, then he should go for it. :)
 
i never was a huge ATI fan so i defiantly wanna go nvidia don't know weather i wanna go with sli or not though it use to have lots of problems im assuming they have cleaned that up alot
