hi, ive been having this problem for a while now, when i log into my account on XP it takes a very long time to log in. it use to be very fast but now it kinda hangs right after i enter my password and then after a while it switches to my desktop picture (but no icons are shown) and hangs for a little while longer then finally everything on the desktop loads. i dont have an overload of start up processes either. there are only 2-3 in msconfig that are checked and once everything has finished loading upon start up there are about 35 processes running. not really sure where to start on this one, any suggestions?

You may have an excessive amount of unnecessary startup items.
intel pentium (D) 820 2.8 Ghz processor, 2 Gb Ram, and it is an HP media center computer.
nah the start up items only seem to start loading once all this freezing finishes, and thye load very fast, as i said i only have 35 processes and the only things enabled in msconfig are essentials. such as AV and firewall.

1) Check for an infection, malicious software etc.
2) Download and run CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ Which is an excellent cleaner and registry checker/cleaner.
Other than that can you think of anything, like recent software installs, that may have been the cause of this drastic slow down.
There is the possibility i suppose that it could be some sort of hardware problem? Can you check you system logs for any warnings or errors. Type eventvwr.msc in to Run, and have a look. I've know systems to have log in hangs due to dodgy DVD drives in that case a warning message was logged.

well after months of this happening it just stopped doing it yesterday, i can logon in seconds once again. not sure if i did anything really, i did several spyware scans and what not but i dont think they had anything to do with the fix as i did them several days eariler...windows can be funny sometimes i guess

Use a Registry Cleaner, Disk Defragmenter, Virus Removal app.
Since I'm in the Linux world, I can't really suggest specifics because honestly I don't know. I do know AVG offers a good set of software here. The defrag app is already included w/ windows, but as far as I know, it isn't as good as Diskeeper.
