well the title says it all and i have a few questions
on our home computer we had a 400GB HD with with tons of valuable files and software and now its all gone.

but the stuff im most worried about is our Adobe Master collection software. it was like +$2000 worth of software and it was on our home computer and our other computer at my dads work(both are vista). And now the installation discs for our Adobe Master Collection are nowhere to be found!!! :(

we are thinking about installing the HD from my dads work on to our home computer, but we are not sure if this will work. Or if we could copy the software files onto another HD and install that HD on our home computer.

so if anyone knows anything about this please help.

mine also like that. It refuse to working anymore. Thank God it still under warranty and i just need to replace it. I also asked them to recover any recoverable files.

You just can't copy program files from one drive to the next and expect the program to work properly, you would have to use the cd to reinstall the program. Install files are put into multiple directories to make the program work properly.

So we cant just make a backup with an external harddrive of my dads computer and do a system restore on our home computer once we get another harddrive?

if the hard drive is bricked, you will have to give a professional a couple arms and legs to recover your valuable data. if the hard drive still works, you can do a number of things to recover your data.

Recovering the data probably won't help because you still need an application installation to make it run on a new O/S. Bringing a hard drive from another computer might work - at least until that hard drive crashes. Try it to see. If I were you, I would contact the software companies in question. If you registered your software, they might be able to provide you with new installation discs for a small fee. Certainly it won't hurt to ask. If the software wasn't registered then I don't have any suggestions.

People always think their hard drive won't crash. Actually, all hard drives crash eventually. I swap out my hard drives after about 3 years of use. That's why we need to protect our applications and data files.
