Computer hardware problem....

Hi,

I have a problem with my computer its really weird, It boots up and when it goes into the windows xp loading screen, it will shut off and reboot.

I looked at the error log and it said that it is a keyboard not functional. I changed out 3 keyboards and it didn't help.

Now i know that one of you is going to kill me over this but i called geek squad and they said it was a problem with my hard ware. Now they want 200 dollars and frankly i don't have that so I'm wondering if any of you know what i could be... i mean I can change out parts and stuff like that. Can one of you help?

There are a few things right off to consider. One is a loose contact or cold solder joint on the board itself. If the case was bumped with the keyboard plugged in at some time the pressure there would bend the socket enough to flex the pin holes enough to see a now loose plug when plugged in. The last thought after having tried more keyboards is a failed component on the board itself. One of more os these would be a cause for this.

Your connection may be going bad. If your keyboard is PS/2(round connection, usually with a keyboard icon beside it) then try a USB keyboard and see if that helps.
Mobo connections can go bad over the years, how old is your computer?

It might be a keyboard BIOS as well. Out of curiosity, do the keyboard lights light up when you power up the computer?

You could try a reformat.

Like you have said, the keyboard is actually working because you can navigate around windows.

But for some reason windows is thinking that there is a problem somewhere:confused:

I know this is not related to keyboards in any way but have you checked your cpu temp?

Could jus't be a coincidence that windows is showing a keyboard error and also shutting down.

it does light up and i can use it like navigating around my start up menu

This suggests the idea of a loose or intermittent contacts or wires pulled off and barely making contact inside the plug itself. If you ever bumped the keyboard plug when moving the case around and putting it back and bumped a wall or something else that could easily see this. You wouldn't reformat your hard drive due to problem with hardware. Simply try a different keyboard to see if that sees this corrected.

im not really sure but if it was my cpu temp.... i dont know but if i fried my cpu it wouldn't even turn on... hmmm im going to try to make sure all my wires in my pc are good.... but what really isses me off is that i just paid for my WoW account :(

If you cooked a cpu the only you would see rather hear would be an audio alarm in the form of constant beeps heard or a visual message onscreen. A cpu doesn't heat up until the system is booted and running for a period of time. The best thing to do at this time is to try a different keyboard on it. If there are no problems seen then the plug new one fits tighter meaning a loose plug socket on the board or a loose wire from being torn off of a pin from the plug itself and barely making contact.

You won't find the problem inside the case unless a contact from the socket is broken and lifted a little. Inside the socket for the keyboard plug is what gets stretched if you bump the plug hard enough when moving the case around. You would need a pocket magnifier to get the close look at the plug socket to see if a contact to the board was broken.

I would check the CPU, well atleast the heatsink anyways, when my CPU's heatsink wasn't all the way on 3 of the 4 things were attached. My computer gave me a memory error.

A cpu problem is far away from one with a keyboard. If a cpu fails the system won't even start to see the post tests. A keyboard is an input device where contacts, wires in the cord and plug, and leads to the board can see damage and the system will start. If the keyboard has a usb adapter you could try plugging it in that way to see anything is noticed. You would have to then enter the bios to enable usb keyboard support if not already done.
