computer has random shutdown attacks!

my computer is really making me mad. ill be using it and after like 4 or five hours of being on it will just shut-off out of no where! what is wrong with it? lately my northbridge chipset has been getting really hot too, so maybe its shutting of because its getting so hot?
computer specs:
gigabyte Nvidia 630i micro atx motherboard
2x1gb sticks of ddr2 800(g.skill)
250gb seagate
400w psu(linkworld)
and finally vista ultimate 32bit

Well if something's been getting hot and the computer starts shutting down randomly, 1+1=2 and I'd get a can of compressed air and clean the computer out and if that doesn't do the trick, you may want to replace the thermal paste.
 
You can check your temps using monitoring programs like SpeedFan, Everest, Core Temp, or PC Wizard. E4500's don't run hot, so I would bet your issue is dust clogging the HSF (as hack said, grab some CA and go to town!) or an improperly-mounted HSF.

I would pull off the HSF, reapply thermal compound regardless, then make sure the HSF is mounted properly. Are you using the stock Intel fan? They are notoriously difficult to set up properly the way their push pins are designed.
 
I once forgot to turn on the air conditioner in a room full of servers after I finished a phone call. I remembered when the servers started shutting off because the room got up to 92 deg. If you know you have a heat issue, then that is most likely your problem because that is exactly what a overheated processor will do. Try taking your case side panel off to see how that affects it.
 
Yeah, take the case off. If there's any dust, get rid of it with compressed air. But do monitor those temps..
 
my case is open and there is no dust. i had this problem and my cpu would run at 40 C and so i took off the heatsink, re applied thermal paste, then put it back on and now it runs at like 20 C. but my northbridge heatsink! it gets hot! i feel it every once and a little while and it almost burns my finger! so i think ill buy a new heatsink for my northbridge and take the dusting into account.

Well, no dust inside is good:) NB chipsets tend to run hot, so you may want to consider leaving it as-is. My CPU runs wicked cold, but the NB is always warm to the touch, and hot during some applications. It's a bit tricky changing a HS on one. If you do decide to do it, make sure you apply some thermal compound on it just like you would a CPU HSF.
 
Yes you want to get rid of all the dust out of your computer completly.
And then run several temp tests to see if your computers shuts down at the same temp.
 
Hard Drives are very finicky about most issues, heat included. If it were a HDD, my guess is there would be other symptoms too.

Could you download one (or more) of those monitoring programs and post up your temps. That will be the easiest way to pinpoint a heat issue for a component.
 
well photo bucket is down so i cant post a pic. but my temps and stuff are

cpu- core 1-29 degrees
core 2-28

harddrive- 39 degrees

thats the best i can give you i guess
 
If it shuts down out of nowhere, like you pulled the cord, it's almost 100% unlikely it's an infection.

What are your PC specs and PSU specs?
