So I found a product key on my Windows Xp disc under a unattend.txt file. I entered it and then a blue box came up that said "Let's activate Windows now" with two choices. I don't have my wi-fi connection up yet so couldn't finish the installation.
Is this what I should see at this point? The privacy statment says the key will be sent along with a computer-hash to Microsoft.
This disc they sent me with the Dell didn't even come in the original box. If it's been installed before on another computer will I have to buy a new key do you think ?

I am just learning about computers right now....can I up-grade to Windows 8 on a computer that was originally sold to run Xp ?

I am mainly interested in watching YouTube...as far as actually making folders, files, etc. I probably wouldn't do much of that.

Someone else told me about Linux...is that a cd-disc? How much does it cost?

Linux is free. You can download and burn it to a CD/DVD to install it.

I recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint

Nah I would go Xubuntu or Linux Mint MATE. It's a old PC with only a P4.

It doesn't matter, every OS will be fast enough to watch youtube.

Ubuntu xbmc is also fun and fast, using it on my athlon as media pc .

Or luna, linux based OS with Mac design

Lol, it really doesn't matter, because youtube is youtube...

Well since you only want to watch YouTube videos, you would probably be fine with Linux. It's free anyway whereas Windows is not.

Then you can use the Yumi multiboot installer to install it to a flashdrive and install it off that.

My computer is a LOT weaker than yours and I still watch youtube videos just fine even on 720p so your computer's specifications are strong more than enough to just watch youtube videos believe me.
So any operating system will handle that just fine as long as you are not running tons of other things which will eat your RAM,VRAM and especially CPU.
