Computer Hates Me

I'm trying to fix a friends computer. They were messing with Limewire and downloaded a heap of trouble. My question is.... should I try to access the internet under safe mode. They have no protection whatsoever and in order for me to download your Hijackthis log I have to connect to the internet. I don't want to screw up the computer worse than it already is.
 
If you think that computer hates you wait till ya see mine. After you get done opening a program in mine it wont open any other Program I have in the system! And to top things off it takes 8 minutes for this hunk of junk to load up and makes noise like a grumpy hulk.
