Computer having problem

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on a Compaq Presario 5962.

Up until an hour ago it was running just fine. I installed a few programs and it told me to restart for the changes to take effect. So, I did. One problem: It wouldn't start back up. It goes through the normal process until it hits the Windows 2000 loading screen. It loading bar gets to about halfway and then it freezes up. I let it sit for a half an hour thinking it was just taking it's time, but no. I can start it in safe mode no problem, only thing is I don't know what to do to fix this.

I know it's a really really old computer and outdated, but it was running fine before, although slow of course.

Update:

I went into Event Viewer in SafeMode and these are the errors I got:

  • The DHCP Client service depends on the NetBios over Tcpip service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
  • The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service service depends on the AFD Networking Support Environment service which failed to start because of the following error: No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.
  • The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.
  • The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: MRxSmb, NetBIOS, NetBT, RasAcd, Rdbss, Tcpip
  • The server {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Update:

I went into msinfo32 and found these under "Conflicts/Sharing" under "Hardware Resources":

  • Creative Audio PCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)
  • Dynex DX-E102 10/100Mb Network Adapter
  • VIA USB Universal Host Controller
  • VIA USB Universal Host Controller

I don't know what this means.

Update:

This is also one of the errors shows up on the event viewer:

  • The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error: No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.

It sounds like your messages are talking about interrupt conflicts, relating to your network card and sound card. You may have to sort out the interrupt conflicts in safe mode before the system will boot properly.

How do I "sort out the interrupt conflicts in safe mode"?

What computer model are you using again?

I did a quick Google and found nothing about that make and model number. Are you sure that's what your PC is? I dunno if this would help but I think it's worth a try, if you want to avoid such problems you might find that buying an all-in-one computer like a Gateway One or Apple iMac might help you avoid such conflicts to a greater extent. Just my two bobs worth - I might be wrong. The thing about all-in-ones is also that they're great space savers and great for people who hate wires (like me). And yes, you can upgrade these without forking out the money for a whole new system. Hope this helps.
