computer ignorance is not bliss (surfboard question)

Ok, I have an existing computer obviously working on a SB4100 cable modem. No problems there...admittedly the "cable guy" showed up and did all the work, I have no idea how the surfboard actually works.

I drag my old computer out of storage and just plug the ethernet cable right into the back of it. I do some searching to see how to make the surfboard work on the old computer...

I am getting an IP address, I have the setting on for "automatic" to find the IP, the icon says it's connected, etc. and I get a connection speed...this is as far as I can figure out what to check by looking online.

But when I try to open the internet I get the error page?

I also found my old router in storage that a friend had set up when we lived together...would that help anything or will it continue my brain meltdown? He had it set up so that we used a single surfboard and then had two computers on the router, but he did all the work.

If anyone can help out I would appreciate it.

what os ?

try run type in cmd for 32 bit os
and command for 16 bit OS

THEN TYPE ipconfig /release hit enter
then WAIT for results
then type ipconfig /renew
hit enter

that should do it
you may also want to turn all off. then turn on cable modem, wait a minute, turn on pc's.

First off, thanks for the info and the reply. Turning everything off was the first thing I tried ;)

I tried what you said to do, (it's a 32 running XP by the way) and here's what happened...

Documents and settings/ipconfig/release

reply was...IP address for adapter local area connection 2 has already been released

I type...Documents and settings/ipconfig/renew

reply was...Unable to contact your DHCP Server request has timed out

Now, when I look under Network Connections, the LAN or High Speed Internet shows a connection (Local Area 2) and a speed, etc. As if it is connected rather than when I unplug it and it says "no connection".

Then, when I try to open explorer, I get nothing. Does the computer need a driver or software or something to communicate to the surfboard or something?

Ok, I dug my router out of storage just for kicks to see what would happen...

Computer #1 (the new one) works fine, just as before through the router

Computer #2 (old one) does exactly as it did when I tried to connect it directly to the surfboard.

I checked and both computers have different IP addresses, I tried deleting the ARP Cache as directed through searching online for answers. I even put another internet explorer on the old computer just to see if it was a problem with the Microsoft Explorer. I still get nothing.

Can anyone think of something I'm forgetting?
