computer in unheated garage

Hi,
I was thinking about putting a spare pc I have in my garage. The garage is usually heated during the day with a woodstove but during the night is unheated. Would a pc work in these conditions or would it be too damp?
Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks, Leonard

I would wait on others opinions, but I would think that as long as you kept it off the floor and maybe put a sheet over it at night when your not using it that it wouldnt be to big a problem. A few years ago, one of my neighbors gave me an old computer he kept in his garage for years and it worked fine, heck, i used the monitor and keyboard from it till about 3 weeks ago! Again, im no expert but I cant see it hurting much since you said its an older pc anyways.

You could try building a custom box that will go around your computer case. Use some kind of filter material as an inlet and that should remove most of the water vapor which will cut down the chance of condensation building up in your system.

The heat of the system would act as a barrier between the outside case and system causing the condensation to collect on the filter material.

Just an idea, not really sure it would work.

Do you see a lot of condensation inside the garage first thing in the morning?

or you could get one of those dehumidifiers and put it in your basement.

To my knowledge, it will remove water vapor from the air. I am not sure this is correct since I don't have it. :D

That would actually be a really good idea! Put a dehumidifier by the computer and that would suck up a lot of the water in the air. Good idea Bert!

yeah great idea,

i put an old computer in my garrage some time back and it was in there for about two months and we never had any problems with it.

it got realy cold in there at night too :D

If you do decide to get a dehumidifier, just make sure that you throw the water in the container every now and then. I imagine if your garage (for some reason I keep thinking this is for your basement, hence my reference to your basement in my last post :P) is really damp, that container can fill up quite fast. To prevent overflow of water that might end up destroying your electronics, check on it often and throw the water away if its like half full or something.

Good luck. :)

I have never thought about putting a few servers in my basement, I would put them in a cabinet or something. My basement is kept at the same temp as my living space... It is an unfinished part of my house
