computer infected by a Worm virus?

My parents computer has been infected by a worm or other such virus i see warnings and anti virus protection updates but i didnt know which to trust as my real anti virus or if it was the virus trying to trick me. i have tried running all the virus scan on the computer. which includes Mcafee(from my isp) malware bytes,spybot search and destroy, and i also had mcafee site advisor on there, when i went to run malware bytes the virus deleted the exe file for it so no luck there when i went to reinstall it, it failed, i tried installing avg cause that never failed me in the past but the virus blocked all attempts at antivirus installations, i tried hp restore and it told me it was corrupted. I couldnt even start the computer in safe mode, so thank god i had backed up the hard drive cause i just restarted and did hp destructive recovery and that did the trick. My question, next time how would i get around all those obstacles other than the way i did? and is there a protection program im missing? like i said i have McAfee(which i think im switching back to AVG)Malware Bytes,Spybot, and i was thinking of putting Comodo Firewall on there. Will that suffice? or is there another free program i should use. basically i want to idiot proof this computer so that they can do just about anything and wont mess it up. Thank you in advance
 
You should have came here first before doing the destructive restore. We could have gotten you running again with a few different methods. One is by running a special program called combofix which would have gotten rid of most of your problems, which would have allowed malwarebytes and your other security programs to start working correctly then. And if combofix wouldn't have worked then we could have other things, like putting your drive in another system and scan it using a fully updated antivirus program. So if you have any more problems come here and we'll help you out.
 
Thank you for that, my biggest concern with hooking up an infected drive to a healthy system is, will it infect the other computer? and if there is a way to get the computer your putting it in not to open it until you want to how? thank you.
 
It's possible that the drive could infect the other one but its not probable. As long as you aren't transferring files from drive to drive. All you need to do is do a virus scan on it.
 
make sure the drive you hook up contains no files just to be safe, thats why i always have an extra old school 5GB external hard drive i use as a dummy to fix problems :)
