computer is makin a wierd sound

my friend has a computer, which is moderetly old.....

its got windows 98 running on it

and recently it started makin some odd noises

it sounds like a glass shattering noise....

any1 ever this happen to them before

P.S.
from past experience i think it might be the hard drive, but i actually have no heard the noise and cant say for sure

Heh, sounds like his hard drive is getting ready to go.

The best thing to do in this situation is:

1. Grab a bag of popcorn.
2. Copy some huge files around.
3. Wait for your hard drive to die.

It's great fun, really :D

you guys are assholes... unplug the harddrive, turn the system on and see if the noise presists, if it does, i suggest getting a new harddrive ASAP and loading the operating system on it and backing up your files

well ive never worked with any of my friends comp. , especially ancient ones

i think that he only has one hard drive though, will ot start up if the hard drive is unplugged??

and it doesnt do the noise of the time, just occasionally, if that says anything

So you've just said if he removes the hard drive, and the computer continues to make noises(Meaning the problem isn't the harddrive), buy a new hard drive. I think you're the asshole trying to get him to waste his money ;P .

thereckerdbraikr: Make sure all important files are backed up. Also, it may be the case vibrating. Try to apply some pressure to the case while it's making the noises, and if it stops then you've found your problem ;) .
