Computer is slowing and should not be

I just recently reinstalled windows and have kept my computer clean and tidy with nothing on it that I don't use daily. I recently upgraded from sucky AT&T 3.0 mbps to Mediacom 12.0 mbps internet. When plugged directly into the computer from the modem, it is zippy fast. But when coming through the NetGear Rangemax Duo Wireless router and in to the computer (but direct, not wireless) it doesn't maintain the same speed. As a matter of fact, it is as if I'm using freakin' dial-up, with constant buffering for news videos, youtube, and netflicks. Can something be done to improve this? Can I somehow split the signal coming from the modem and bypass the wireless router and go directly into the computer? I use the wireless to stream to my Wii and laptop in the other rooms. They show the same buffering. THANKS SO MUCH for your assistance!!

Have you tried using a different port on the router? Try upgrading the firmware on the router to see if the speed increases. Have you done a hard reset on the router?

You may have a faulty router.

Try a different router port

Perform a hard reset on the router
(save your configuration before proceeding)

Flash the firmware.

If it's still super slow you may need to buy a new router. If you have another router available just for testing, that would be useful.

Is the wifi any better?

:-} I have no idea about changing the ports. Is that the same as the position that the ethernet plug goes into? I have 1, 2, 3, and 4. Setup for the device had me plug it into 3 and 4. Does it matter? And how do I upgrade the firmware. Is that found on the NetGear website? And I didn't set up any configurations, so is there still anything to save before doing a hard reset that I don't know about? I'm assuming "flash the firmware" also means to update it, right? The wifi is the same as the computer, which makes me think it is with the router device.

How often should I do a hard reset of the router?

Many thanks!!!:):)

Oh, I don't think the router is faulty, because there are plenty of times when it works smooth. But it seems to be an intermittent problem. I am just pretty sure that it is slowing down things because when I switched over to the cable modem I noticed during Mediacom's install/setup (direct to computer) that things really sizzled, but as soon as they left and I rewired to go through the router, I could tell it didn't have the same zing. It was initially still fast, but seems to have gradually degraded since. And I don't want to give you the impression that it is constantly slow. It is constant enough for me to have to ask, just not constant enough for me to imagine I need a new router (this one isn't old and is suppose to be a pretty decent router). It is just.....glittchy at 30 to 40% of the time and I know that, all things being equal, it shouldn't be.

Yes, that is my router. I've looked all over the unit and can't find a version. There is no V1 or V2 behind the unit name anywhere on it. Just WNDR3300.

Just because it works normally sometimes doesn't mean the router isn't bad. If your router is working 50% (or not working intermittently), then it's still faulty. When the connection is slow, connect directly to the modem. If that resolves the issue, switch back to the router. If it's slow again, you've confirmed something is wrong with the router.

My old router was partially fried by a thunderstorm. at regular speeds it was fine and occasionally dropped out where it hadn't before.

However after our speeds god throttled (we hit our data limit :() the speeds were ohrrible and it was the routers fault... could barely connect to the net.

I'm pretty sure the router is my culprit. At this point I am connecting to the internet via the modem direcly into my laptop. When I connect the ethernet cable to the router the yellow internet light does not light to tell me I'm connected. All the other appropriate signal lights work. This was not a problem 4 hours ago until I went to reroute the signal flow of the internet to bypass the router and go directly into the main computer from the modem. That is when my primary computer stopped connecting to the internet entirely w/ a 169.254.xx.x ip addy. Now it doesn't work at all and Dell can't seem to correct this. But ALSO, if I connect back through the router and attempt to use any of my wifi devices, I get bupkus. I don't even get the lint that bupkus carries in his pocket. After disconnecting everything from everything and power cycling everything, then connecting in this order: modem to pwrcble/ pwrcble to outlet/ethernet to modem/ethernet to router/routher to pwrcble/pwrcble to outlet, and stopping there to verify connectivity, my router shows that all is well except no internet connectivity. I have reset the modem as well. I am helpless and at my wits end. I'm so exausted and frustrated I don't know what to do. I am wholly giving up, save any advice you may have that I will have to look into tomorrow. For now, I must rest and try and relieve some stress. I'm not sure I've ever been so frustrated in my life.

Time for a new router i suspect. and put it on a surge-protected powerboard, we learned that lesson the hard way ;)

you have to power cycle the modeom in most caces, (unplug it and back it when you change routers or computer systems, It's becuase your isp only gives you one IP.
but its the router,
every 2 years I have to replace mine as they just wear out,
