Hi, im trying to build my first computer. After i installed everything and i turned it on the monitor is just black and doesnt show anything, and there is no power to the keyboard or mouse for some reason. Also if i try adn open the cd drives they dont open, even though their power lights are on. everything is runnign fans, hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, disk drives, just keyboard and mouse dont get power. Does anyone know if i did anything wrong or something??

Help is very much appriciated, thanks!

When CD drives doen't open, that tends to mean a hardware problem. Could be as simple as master/slave settings are wrong(assuming you have PATA drives) or it could be a bad motherboard. I'd try to remove ALL hardware and just try to run with the PSU, single stick of RAM, and GPU.

Also, it's always a good measure to be sure you're mobo and bios revision is compatible with your CPU.

yeah, it is probably a hardware problem. but dont worry, it is likely that something is just misconfigured. try doing what "the_other_one" said leaving only the minimum: CPU, one stick of RAM, and your video card. also make sure that you did a good job installing the thermal paste and the heatsink. also, could you give us the specs of the computer?

sure, here ill just give you the links to what i bought,
tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811133154
cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103773
mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131013
ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211066
hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152052

the power supply is 480 and its from my old computer and the disk drives are from my old computer too. not sure what they are excatly

should be fine then. have you tried stripping everything down to just the CPU, one stick of RAM, and the video card? also, when you try to power up, are there any beeps?

Is your "old" power supply an 20pin? or 24 pin? The jumper should be on the back of the HDD, with some pins and a little colored thingy...

SATA 1...don't put it in RAID unless you are configured a RAID array which needs multiple drives to accomplish

ok, now that you have got it working with minium, start putting things back together one at a time and seeing if it boots. start with the rest of your RAM. then any other expansion PCI cards, then your HDD, then your optical drives. i have a feeling it is one of two things:

1) your power supply just isnt cutting it

2) you need to enter your RAM timings manually

Ok, thanks guys everything is working fine now. Now i have another problem, i installed windows and it works. But i was screwing around with the networking stuff, in Network Connections and somehow now when i restart mycompuer instead of having the picture and me clicking it i get this box that pops up with a black backgournd that logs me in. and when i get logged in i go to start and i dont have a picture where it is suppost to be if you know what im talking about. does anyone know how to make it the regular way?

If you've got XP follow these steps because I think you may have the classic prompt.

Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off

Here select 'Use Welcome screen'. if it's already checked then I don't know.
