With two partitions originally seen on the drive for dual OSing and subsequently remioving one you can also remove the reference to it in the boot.ini file. That will remove that option completely. The system locks you are seeing can either Windows or hardware problems. The current Windows installation is one of a few things to look at here.

Memory faults that have developed or a need to update the system bios are two common problems seen. The problems you are having require a deletion of the current partition and creation of a new primary for a fresh install of XP. When booting from the installation disk and going to install the option to delete the present installation is there with the "L' and "D" keys being used istead of pressing the enter. Once this is done you are now free to get Windows on.

Before attempting the above you may want to rule out any memory problems by running a good stress tester like Memtest. Since Windows is having problems a 3 1/2" floppy would be the method to there to run memtest. You can get the last updated version for floppies at http://www.memtest86.com/ along with iso images for bootable cds. If you are currently running a dual core processor the alternate site for the Linux free utility is at http://www.memtest.org/
