Computer keeps randomly deleting files...

Over the past year and a bit my computer (desktop Acer) has been randomly deleting files. One day we got home and the whole My Documents folder had dissapeared without a trace. Not even my computer man could find them.

Now I have just gotten back from holiday and have noticed that hundreds of photos have dissapeared. For example, one folder which used to have 150 photos now only has 4, and one folder which had 400 pictures now only has 20. I have no idea whats going on.

Im considering just doing a system restore?? Its kind of my solution to everything...

Start here.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Try a full hard drive search for some of those files that are missing.

Could be bad sectors on the hard drive. I can't think of any off the top of my head but look for a free program that tests hard drive performance.

How old is this computer and do you do any regular maintenence like defrag and antivirus/spyware etc. scans?

Does anyone else have access to the computer and might have been screwing around with it?

Has anyone included "hidden files" in the file searches?

In the future you can use a program called DKHardDrive-Light that shows you what files are being modified/written to/deleted etc.. You can have it run in the background so if files are again coming up missing you can see what happened to them. Of course if the prorgram has no reference to the files that are missing but the files are actually missing then theres probably a performance issue with the hard drive
