Computer keeps shutting down when i open up games???

i havent had this problem before. It did happen, but rarely, but now its happening very frequently. Basically when i open up WoW and CS:S the computer just shuts down. Could it be my power supply???

As i said it didnt happen that much about 2 months ago but now its happening sooo much. Ive got a lot of background stuff running. Should i close all this down, coz i dont need it to play the games??
 
For starters, I'd close down as much as you can before you start your game. Secondly, I'd also run checks for spyware / viruses.

Also, have you recently installed any hardware or software onto your computer? They could be causing the problem too.

Go into the properties screen of My Computer (Windows Key + Pause), and head to the advanced tab. Under 'Startup and Recovery' (Third box down), click Settings, then under System Failure, untick 'Automatically Restart'.

This tells Windows not to restart if it encounters a Blue Screen, try this, and tell us if you get a Blue Screen or not when you start your game.
 
Maybe it's your power supply?
Yeah, run a virus check I guess, it might be using up the CPU power.
And I would try closing down the rest of the stuff..
You tried reinstalling the games?

My brothers PSU went ka-put today, the connections were gone, it just broke when he tried to open a game..

Did you build this computer yourself, or did you buy it? Is the computer in a warm room, or cool one?

Your problem sounds to me like your CPU is overheating, and shutting off to prevent your cpu from frying. Based on what you've told us, it could be a lot of things, though. Download a program like SpeedFan and tell us your CPU temp idle (when not doing anything) and full load (when playing a game, etc).

i have had previous problems with my computer overheating. My room is very very hot in the summer as ive got the boiler cupboard in my room. Ive have to buy a new cpu cooler to fix the problem.

Ive run norton and it has found nothing

Im gona try turning off the automatic restart now, ill get back to you with this one
 
download speedfan and see what your temps are. what kind of cpu do you have? a new HSF may be in order if you have a hot room
 
got amd athlon xp 2600

just d/l motherboard monitor

CPU temp is - 52 c

That good or bad. Its in the red so i take it that its bad. Could my cpu cooler and fan be clogged up???

52C idle is pretty hot. I'm pretty sure that your CPU is overheating when you play games, etc.

This could be caused by a number of problems. Since you installed the HSF yourself, you could have used too much thermal paste. You could have done something wrong when putting the thermal paste on the cpu.

What thermal paste did you use? Arctic Silver 5 is the "standard" for thermal paste.

Oh, and NEVER turn off the automatic shutdown feature. NEVER (this would be more effective if I had a newspaper). This feature will turn off the computer to protect it from overheating, just like yours is doing. If you turn it off, your cpu will fry when playing a game.

Well i installed it myself and used the thermal paste that com with it??

I dont think i installed it wrong coz its bin fine for ages. as i said before its only happening very frequently since like 2 months ago

If i buy artic silver will it make a big difference??

You used a thermal pad, then. These are just something that the companies throw into the packages of HSF's and CPU's to prevent idiots from running the CPU without any sort of thermal paste/pad/grease.

Arctic Silver 5 will lower your CPU temps anywhere between 2ºC-12ºC, according to the mfg.

Check the load temps also because an idle temp of 52C and a load temp of 60C doesnt neccesarily mean the temps are the problem :)

A few degrees here/there, nothing life altering (if it is life altering the problem wasnt the TIM then)

Although it should be noted temperature drops closer to the low end of that are the norm.

Some things to check:
- Log the CPU, NB, GPU temps and voltages with Speedfan or similar
- Questions 101 (what hardware do you have?)
 
Thats a decent cooler: make sure you dont have too much (or no) thermal paste and that you've cleaned off the previous stuff.

yep thats all clean, its really annoying it keeps happening wen i turn on CS:S

Must be over heating, Wud water cooling help???

just checked the temps and its around 54-57 c

but this was just after playing for about 2 mins. Maybe after a few hours of playing it cud be a lot hotter, i duno yet

Any ideas??
