2400CPU, 2 gigs memory, windows XP prof OS. backup unit got hit by something. reliable for years but suddenly crashed. Tried reloading win XP an all seemed well but after reloading it wouldn't boot up. tried loading with Linux ubuntu, same thing. Tried SUSE 11.1, again all went well during installation of OS but once loaded it wouldn't boot. tried a new sata HD, reloaded but still it won't boot. this has really got me puzzled, suggestions appreciated. OH yes, I did remember to change BIOS back to boot from HD each time.

When you say you tried ubuntu, did you do a full installation or just live CD?
Will it boot live CDs?
What point does it stop booting? Like do you see the "Windows XP loading" screen.

once the operating system CD is loaded and the CD removed the computer will not boot to the hard drive. all OS's do the same. they load and all seems well until I try to boot up from the hard drive. then I get the message unable to find.........New hard drive didn't fix the problem.

You may want to check the CMOS battery. It may be shot therefore
not allowing the BIOS to remember where to boot to. Worth a check.
