Computer locking up.

That BIOS version is 7B3P081G and it's for vista. I'm at version 7B3P091G running win 7. So I think I'm up to date.. I think...

I see that you are a little lost with this "BIOS update".
BIOS stands for "Basic Imput Outpu System" and its a small Chip That is in your motherboard..
When you fire your computer, the firsty thing that you see is a black screen with some white words isnt it?
Well that is your BIOS starting and asking the chipset (another chip in your motherboard) wich devices are there (conected to the motherboard) and their models.
If the BIOS have some hardware that she cant controll she wont use it and other that she isnt 100% sure how the device wors she will try to put it running (control it..and your CPU is in this level..).
So, BIOS is a integrated chip in your motherboard,if you change the motherboard you will have another BIOS..
If you delete your WINDOWS (that is installed in your Hard Disk) you still gonna be able to boot to BIOS because its a independent Program from the WINDOWS and you can install another WINDOWS.
So, BIOS controls all the devices that are atached to the motherboard (like you HDD or Graphics card or Sound card ,etc i think you got the point..)
So in this case you need to update your BIOS and BIOS its independent from the windows or Linux or any Operating System you have installed it will allways update the BIOS from one way or another.
Since we are talking about BIOS,i can tell you that is dangerous to update a BIOS because if something goes WRONG during the update, you will have a dead motherboard (because the BIOS is a program that controls the Motherboard and the All the devices atached to it..).
And there is nothing before a BIOS in a computer were you can boot to try to put the BIOS again running (some motherboards have 2 BIOS and if one gotcorrupted, the motherboard will boot from the other one but that is NOT you case!!).
I really recommend that if you are not really sure how a BIOS work and the traps you can get updating it i would go for a email to Gateway support or try a compatible CPU (ask a friend just for a couple of days to try it out) to your System ok?
About you question about if it was compatible with windows 7 the awnswer is yes because at the time the BIOS update was putted online for download there wasnt any windows 7 at the time and why it got to compatible with windows if its a update for a chip in the board? In the old days you need a floppy to boot to a utility that will manage to delete one BIOS and put the new one in and now they found a way to update the BIOS from windows.

Umm If gateway listed that that BIOS update supports Windows Vista 32bit and I'm running window 7 64bit I don't think it will work out. I think I'll just buy a mobo that supports my cpu.
