Computer locks up

Hello everyone.

I havn't got much time to search the Forum for similar problems to mine, because my computer will lock up.

My trial version of Norton ran out over Christmas and i think i have picked up some nasty stuff whilst not protected.

I have since downloaded AVG Antivirus and RegVac and both have found and rectified many faults. However, the Computer is still locking up and i'm constantly powering down and rebooting.

Can anyone offer advice on what to try next. I would like to avoid reformatting if possible.

Many thanks.

Steve.

Reformatting is what I would suggest, but I know it can be a pain :)

Maybe try a system restore point, one that was made before your installation of Norton ran out? That way, you could disconnect from the internet, scrap Norton and install AVG (but make sure you pay the £40 a year, or you don't get firewall, spam etc).

Hi Azwebs.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have had to reboot twice since my post.

I am no Computer Wiz and i don't know what you mean by System Restore Point. I suspect it is something i should have done before scrapping my Norton and Downloading AVG. Am i right in making that assumption?

Is there any other free software that might help with this problem?

Steve.

I did another Norton uninstall through their own site rather than using add/remove programmes and this appears to have done the job. I think there must have been something left in the registry that was causing problems.

Thanks for your help Azwebs.

Steve
