I have a 15 year old Quantex p3 with origonal hard drive. Lately the computer freezes up after about half an hour(mouse locked in place ect.) I have to reboot and it will happen again. Is this a cpu problem or hard drive problem in most cases.? the fans are working.
I was running W2000prof. yesterday I let my xp disk do a compatablitly check on the computer. It said ok no issues so I reformated the drive and installed xp with no problem. I did the routine upgrades to exporer 7 (for xp) and other micrsoft things. Installed my HP printer software and tested it ok. It all looked great. this morning it was locked up. I couldnt reboot either . I had to leave it alone untill I got back from work. then when turned on it did reboot ok. an hour or two later its locked up. Fortunatly this is only a secondary computer .
How did you get a 15 year old computer to install XP? There is no way, wouldn't be enough memory. If it was 15 years old then it would be pre windows 95 hardware.
I see now It was 1999 as indicated on my sales reciept . I should have checked that info. Good accuracy observation. So Im hoping its not a cpu problem because then I wouldnt bother with it and Id begin the scavenge process. If it can be determined that the drive is toast Id just replace it.
You can download the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run a scan on the drive. I just got done working on a system that was 10 years old and had a bad original hard drive. Since the system was so old, they had me build them a new system. If you give me the maker of the hard drive and model number I'll link you to their diagnostic utility.
PS I forgot to reply after testing. My hard drive DID fail the test so I bought a new one from a local computer place. All works good now so I have a secondary computer working . thanks
