What oem desktop manufacturers are still alive? I know there is Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq(which is technically HP), what happened to Acer, Sony they all died and gone away?

why are you saying that acer and sony died? they still make pc's and i've seen them all over the place. Bestbuy, newegg.com, etc, there are also many other manufacturers, i just dont remember all of their names.

it seems like everyone is building their own computer these days....

Yes, it's often cheaper and you get to decide what goes in the computer, instead of paying extra for hardware/software you don't need.

Well it's not necessarily always cheaper. Most of the time, it's more expensive if you try to get the exact same parts in an oem machine. But if you don't need stuff, and know exactly what you don't need, then your price will go down. But if you're trying to save money by buying mismatched/generic parts, well you'll most likely spend more money. I feel oems offer a good deal to ppl who know nothing about computers and have no time to build their own.

Don't bother with brand names..... EVER. Aftersales service is crap with everyone. Build your own, at least then you know whats in ti and what con go wrong if theres a problem.

Prices are s damn cheap for components nowadays. I built my latest system (specs below) for just under £300. And it's better than most of the ones in retail at the moment aswell.

Dont buy from the overpriced faceless corporations, screw them and build your own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
