Computer monitor question please help

I am trying to get files off an old computer, please help me:

Ok, so the files are on my old computer with a VGA card and an IDE hard drive. Well my new Dell came with a flat panel and Digital video cable. I sold my old 19" CRT Viewsonic monitor along with the cable. So I bought a new VGA cable the other night. When I hook my old computer up to the flat panel with the VGA cable it says "Unable to display at this resolution".


How do I start the computer up in a lower res so I can access it? or is there any other solutions?

please help me, thank you.
 
I was going to originally take the hard drive out of the old computer and just set it as a slave drive in my new Dell, but the new Dell has a smaller type of connector for it's hard drives.
 
The easiest thing to do would be to purchase used CRT monitor for about $10-20. If the easiest thing to do is what you are looking for :).
 
Thats bs, you dont want that clunky crt sitting around.. The connector you are talking about is a sata connector. Look at the connector the cd or dvd drive uses, it is the same thing as the old computer. Unhook the cd/dvd drive and plug in the HD (computer off). If you want the drive to remain in the computer permanently, get a Sata to IDE hd converter. Should be about $20-$25.
 
If it's a windows system can't you boot in "Safe Mode" to switch the video display to a lower resolution one compatible with the flat panel?

Either try to use onboard and uninstall the GFX drivers, switch back to the card, and re-install drivers, or find an old CRT and down the resolution.
