Computer Not Booting

Ok, I have a completely custom built computer ASUS motherboard, Intel dual core processor, nVidia Video card, hard drive, and a CDROM.

I live in the college dorms, and my computer has been working just fine for about a month and a half. And this morning my computer suddenly stopped booting. It will turn on, everything receives power, but the monitor remains blank and doesn't receive a signal from the modem. When I start it, there is no beep or anything, and there is a green light on the motherboard(which is a good thing if I remember correctly, red means its broke?). After about 20 seconds, the mouse and keyboard will light up, but the monitor remains blank. I have checked my cords to see if plugged in and switched the voltage thing for the power supply on the back to see if that was the problem.

Any suggestions? I run windows XP.

I don't think it is over heating either, I have a lot of fans, the case open for now with another fan blowing on it just to make sure it wasn't the heat. I left it off for hours before even trying again.

Very likely you have a hardware issue with your computer since you are not even getting thru the power on self test (POST).

You might want to try removing the current video card and swapping it with a video card that you know is functional.

The remove power cord and hold in the ON button for 30secs works on half of these No POST issues
I've even removed addon Video cards and unplugged the main power connector to the motherboard, this has worked before as well

Gave it a try, didn't work out yet. I don't have many tools or cleaners because I live in a dorm, so it's been very frustrating so far. I feel like it a power problem. Because we had issues with an xbox recently that was fixed by the dorm director increasing power being sent to our dorm. They flipped the breaker the other day with my computer still running so I dont know if that could have screwed things up or tinkered with anything? There is so many different problems it -could- be so I am trying to not pull all my hair out just yet.. luckily exams just finished so I have a few days to figure this out.

Anytime the power is drastically cut from a computer system, there is a chance that it will cause damage. Thats why some people use battery back up systems in case the power does go off they can safely shut down in a few minutes.

Thanks johnb35, for your information
But the OP requires answers or suggestions on what to do with the present issue

Going by johnb35's post I would say the first option of possible hardware damage, would be to replace the Power Supply (even though you receive the motherboard test light)

Obviously he has damage, which parts is unknown at this time until he starts replacing parts. It could be motherboard, processor, power supply, memory, addon cards. I may not have given him info on how to try to determine what is bad but I did give him information on how to stop it from happening again once he gets this issue fixed.

The power being cut to the computer is vital information that was missing from this thread initially, which helps to narrow the possibilities of what could be the issue.

I think you should try not to be such a tyrant on these forums, and allow other peoples input on the thread as well.

You're not the only person that has relevant information...

Well, I did try hooking it up to a TV with a connection for VGA cables, and it wouldn't show up there either, so I am starting to think it is my video card. Although after the power shut off, my computer did work after that for the day, then the next morning it stopped. I have read a lot of info/input on my problem, and it seems to be leading to the video card. Sadly, I do have some extra ones laying around at home, but thats a few hundred miles from where I am now : (

Obviously you do not have onboard Video on that (?) custom built computer?

I would suggest removing the addon Video card and use high compressed air to remove all dust (that you cannot see)
Note: High compressed air cans can be purchased from most electrical/electronic/computer stores

Another option may also to be remove the button battery on the Motherboard and then locate the Bios Reset Jumper (usually located right next to the CMOS Battery)
Then short the two adjacent pins next to it, then return the jumper and battery (and cleaned Video card) back
Then try turning on again

I am going to try and upload a picture for you guys to help point things out to me, give me around 20 minutes. I am then going to the store to pick up some cleaning things and a very needed screwdriver.

I thought the keyboard and mouse light up after the POST? Not because of the post but just simply after the post. Is the light on your monitor staying orange or blinking or does it turn green?

You are missing the Motherboard Plate
This plate also works as an Earth, and should be mounted

To mount the plate the Motherboard must be removed, and plate purchased and fitted in the case, then the Motherboard put back in.

Well, there are like 9 things underneath the motherboard(forgot what the are called) that raise it up off the case a little less than an inch if thats what you mean?
