Computer not turning on ... at all

Hi guys a couple of weeks ago i moved my computer from my dads to my mums in the car. Before i moved the computer it was working spik and span.

But now my computer wont even turn on !! i thought it was the psu at first so i sent it into my supplier to see if they would replace it on the warrenty but to them it was working ! so i have dont some research and i have heard it was my motherboard ?

I tried again today turning it on and it still does not work. I did not drop the computer or force it into any space it cant fit into ? so i dont know how its broke.

does anyone know what it could be, or is it my motherboard for deffinate ? how could i test this ?

Please get back to me ! I miss my computer :(
 
First, make sure you plugged power into your computer. May sound stupid but I'm pretty damn good with them and I've forgotten that. Then, if you did do that, and are using a power strip, make sure that is ON.

Also if your PSU has a switch on it make sure THAT is on, too.

If you have another motherboard, you can try using that. Just make sure it's the same CPU socket, and takes the same ram.

im using the atx strip i think its called ...

yes i have done all them things just havnt tried it with a different mobo because everything is a laptop except my computer :(

should i send the mobo back

If you can't swap parts out, go to your nearest computer shop and ask them to do it, they will have working spares they can try. Expect to pay a small fee for it though, but it will save you time and money shipping components that you don't need to

Well it is hard to say.

If your optical drive, hard drives and fans (if they are molex connectors) spin up, but nothing else happens, then your power supply is probably fine.

If they spin up and nothing else happens though, it could be your motherboard, maybe CPU. Without swapping out components and testing them, you can't say for certain, just probably.

If nothing at all is happening, then I would get in touch with your power supply manufacturer and BS them, saying that you tested your system with another unit, and it worked fine, you then tried your current power supply in a previously working system, and it won't work now. If nothing at all is happening, then it is your power supply, regardless of what the manufacturers say, or it could be your kettle lead, but those things lasts forever unless you are abusing them
 
nothing is happening at all, no fans spin up or anything :(

i sent the psu back to the supplier who i bought it off and they say it works fine. are you sure this could not be my motherboard ?

i ahve also tried various didferent kettle plugs with it and it still not working

If nothing is spinning up at all, it is your power supply.

Your hard drives don't get power from the motherboard, your optical drives don't, if your fans have molex connectors (4 pins from the power supply), they don't get power from the motherboard, they get power directly from the power supply, so if they aren't working either, it can't be a fault of the motherboard.

The only other possible thing it could be is the cables which go from the case to the motherboard may not be seated properly, so when you press the power button, it doesn't do anything to the system because the wires aren't connected. Take the side off your case and check they are in properly, along with all other power cables.

If you are certain everything is in how it should be, that all kettle leads are working and that every switch that should be on is, then it is your power supply.

There is 1 more possibility that everything but the power supply is dead, but the chances of that happening are near as makes no difference nil unless you set it on fire or drowned it or something :P
 
well the fans on the case connect directly to the psu via 4 pins and none of these fans spin up

i wonder why the company that sold me the psu are saying it working :/

out of curiosity, which company was it? That may in itself be the reason they would say it...
 
that would be your reason why.

I've never used them because of hearing the experience of others that I know. If you get anything faulty, they will swear black is blue it is fine, and if they find it is faulty, it is a damn miracle if you think you are going to get a replacement or refund.

If you can't get them to admit that the PSU is faulty, find out for certain that it is (ie put in one which you know works, or put your power supply into a system you know works) and confront them with this information. If they aren't willing to do anything, read, carefully, through the fine print regarding returns/refunds/warranty, and see if you can claim on it. If they refuse, threaten legal action, if they still refuse, follow it through.

Alternatively, just count your losses and buy a new power supply. You will be a few quid out of pocket, but won't have to go through the hassle of dealing with them and will have a working system at the end
 
hm ok, well could i put my 700w psu into a computer that runs off a 500w psu ? or would it blow the computer to bits lol
 
ok put it into my old computer and it powers up :/ looks like it not my psu after all :(

what else could it beeeee !!

just set the psu with the "broke" computer and its still not working, i have checked the power button cables etc

what could it be :/

Yea that is what I was on about, make sure that the + and - are the right way round.

Also check you have all the cables in right:

1 20 OR 24 pin mobo connectors

1 4 OR 8 pin mobo connectors

1 connectors for each hard drive

1 for each optical drive

the right number for video card(s) if they need them
