Computer only plays sound when loud

I'm having a pretty bizarre problem with my laptop. It happens with both speakers and headphones. When I have sound coming through either, it only plays when it is really loud. If the sound source is quiet, the output is very muffled and very different than normal.

The only recent changes I've done is add Skype and Manycam, but I have uninstalled both and no help.

And ideas what else this might be?

Uninstall the audio driver and then reinstall it.

that happens to me sometimes.. I just unplug them and turn off the pc then plug them back in and turn it on
