Computer only turns on for a few seconds

Hey guys. Long time no see. Well i just built a new custom computer and before anyone says something, all the parts are compatible. So i build the computer and i was able to get into the bios and everything and i did run into a cd drive problem (just wanted to use an older drive to make sure i could get the comp running) so i turned off the comp manually because i couldn't think of another method and i did this to work on the cd drive and check the jumpers. but when i hit the power switch in the back my computer started to turn on but then turned off after only 5 secs, and it has happened multiple times. And the power button does nothing. My parts will be listed below. Please help, i really want this comp running.

I just found out that when the 12v for the cpu isn't plugged it the comp will "stay on" but if i try to have the cpu plugged in the comp shuts off.

ECS Black Series A780GM-A Mobo
APEVIA WIN-500XSPX 500W
AMD Athlon X2 7550 Kuma 2.5GHz Socket AM2+
CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM

sounds like it may be overheating. i would recommend taking off the heatsink reapply the thermal compound then put the heatsink back on and make sure its seated properly

idk ive been doing a bunch of reading and it sounds like a bad mobo, because there was alot of compound, the heatsink came pre greased and i added some extra. the cpu also didn't even have the time to turn on. But i talked to newegg and they are replacing my mobo and covering all charges, just have to wait a week or so for me new 1.

oh well you dont want to have to much! look at some guides and then do it. if you have to much it will overheat because the heat cant dissipate. you only want a small line like across the middle abotu as wide as a grain of rice or a little more. sounds like you put way to much on. you should clean it off and trry again

Ok, ill give it another try. Im not shipping it back until to tomorrow anyways (if it doesnt work)

well with reinstalling everything and less thermal grease i was able to get into the bios, but now i have relized my cd drive isnt working, as i cant open it to put in my ubuntu install cd. so looks like i need to grab a drive out of 1 of the other computers for a few minutes.

hey guys thanks for the quick help, im not installing ubuntu on that comp. and it was running fairly low before i started my install. i cant thank you enough cus you guys just saved me a week of waiting and anticipation.

well the problem is a curing again and i think it its the power supply, becuase i just had the comp on for 3 hours installing oses and what not it ran fine then it randomly shut down again and the entire time the cpu heat sink wasn't hot and i even took off the heat sink the the cpu wasn't hot at all. Im going to test just a little 300w to rule out the mobo

it has been unplugged the entire time. but what i have realized is the psu wont shut off if the 12v isnt plugged in so i think its the mobo, and newegg is replacing it for free, so ill just send that out 2mro to make sure i didn't get a bad mobo, it happens.
