man i thought my cmputer was fixed! i had more memory and a clean up done. now i was chatting and all of a sudden a screen blue comes up and it shuts down my pc for protection so i turn it back on and it freezes up so i turn it off and back on! now it says make sure your modem is connected and working or something of that sort. WHATS UP LOL? thanks for any replies
could this be a virus?? i know im stupid but im running no anti-virus.
im getting norton next week if its a virus its not too late for norton to detect it when i load it right?

Try this first if you want to see if there are virus in your pc.

you could try restarting your computer and when its booting up just keep tapping f8, eventually you will see a screen with a list of things to do, and look for the one that says "use the last known good settings". If that doesn't work, trying downloading "hijack this!" but be very careful. It can screw up your system if you get too trigger happy in deleting things. Look for BHO files "browser helper files" and delete anything that looks weird. Like anything that says "Best deals now!" or "happyhappytoolbarpro"

ANNR- how am i supposed to download those if i cant access the internet?
imsannr-i did that i pushed f8 all it said was windows xp and i clicked it and it booted up

PLEASE i need more help, thanks much much for the help guys!
 
well thats ok, there is another way. This will only take care of minor problems but if xp is just on the fritz it might still work. If you can at least get into windows for a little while before it locks up go to the START button on your toolbar and look for help and support, should have a blue question mark beside it, click on that and click undo changes made with system restore. I haven't done it in a while but if i remember right you can just select an earlier date to restore your computer to. Xp should randomly set up restore points. so choose one from like a month before you have been having problems.
 
If you have access to another computer, and im assuming you do because your responding, you should just download new drivers for that modem. So if you can try to find out what kind it is and just go on another computer and download the drivers and burn them to a cd or put them on a flash drive. most drivers have self install packs so all you would need to do is hit "ok"
 
yeah i have been using my lap top. thanks for the replies! i recently tried to get on and it sill said modem error, an hour later i tried to get on and EVERYTHING is perfect...very odd but i am going to download the spyware and anti-virus tht was shown above
